Thank you for your interest in becoming a tutor for the University of
Michigan Academic Success Program!
The University of Michigan is renowned for student achievement in both academics and
athletics. Student-athletes often face myriad demands including practices, competition, and
rigorous academic coursework. We strive to support our student-athletes and provide the
resources necessary to ensure their continued success in the classroom. As part of this
mission, ASP provides free tutoring to any student-athlete who requests it.
The success of the ASP Tutorial Program is the result of the hard work of the tutors we hire. Our
tutors come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a tremendous amount of diversity to the
program. Their collective knowledge of numerous subjects allows us to provide student-athletes
with the assistance they need in nearly any class. If you still have questions about the program
after reading this FAQ page, please contact our Tutorial Program Coordinator Jan-Marie Bales
at jmbales@umich.edu. If you are ready to apply, please follow the instructions provided to
initiate the process. GO BLUE!
FAQs
Who is eligible to be a tutor?
Many of our tutors are currently enrolled as upperclassman undergraduates, and others have
graduated with a degree from the University of Michigan or another four-year institution. We
strongly encourage graduate students to apply, as they are typically able to tutor for more
advanced courses. If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact Jan-Marie
Bales at jmbales@umich.edu prior to beginning the application process.
Do I need prior teaching experience to be a tutor?
We encourage those with teaching or tutoring experience to apply, but it is not required.
However, strong written and verbal communication skills are a must! Tutors must feel
comfortable initiating conversations with student-athletes and following up with questions to
engage them in the material and gauge their understanding of the subject matter at hand.
How do I apply to be a tutor?
We ask that you fill out the ASP Tutor Application using the following link:

DanJvalE6MQ
In addition, you must submit a current resumé and an electronic copy of your unofficial
transcript(s) to ASPtutorial@umich.edu. Any transcripts from the University of Michigan are
required, as they provide a direct indication of your success in the courses for which you will be
tutoring. However, we request all transcripts, as they may help us to find tutors for unique
course requests from student-athletes.
How much time will I spend tutoring?
The amount of time that our tutors work varies. If hired, you will enter your availability into an
online scheduling tool called GradesFirst. We ask that you are available a minimum of 10 hours
per week and for a two semester commitment for tutoring. If you are unsure about your
availability, please mention this in your application.
When will I be tutoring?
During the fall and winter semesters, tutoring takes place from 8:00am-10:00pm MondayThursday, 8:00am-5:00pm on Friday, and 3:00pm-6:00pm on Sunday. Tutors may schedule
their availability at any point during these times. However, tutors must be available at least one
night per week.
How much will I be paid for tutoring?
We pay our tutors on a sliding scale from $10-$17 depending on their education level, the
classes they are available to tutor, and the amount of time that they have been with the
program.
Where does tutoring take place?
All tutoring takes place at the Stephen M. Ross Academic Center at 1110 S. State Street.
Meeting your student-athlete outside of the Ross Academic Center is NOT permissible.
Do all tutoring sessions have the same structure?
No. Many tutoring sessions are scheduled, one-on-one appointments. However, we encourage
small group appointments for student-athletes who may be taking the same course (only one of
them will set up the initial session). Based on need from more highly-populated classes, we also
provide drop-in tutoring and group exam review sessions. Drop-in tutoring will be available for
biology, chemistry, economics, math, physics, Spanish, statistics, and writing. Times and room
locations are TBD for these drop-in sessions.
How am I matched with a student-athlete?
If you are hired, you will enter the names of the classes or subjects for which you are willing and
capable to tutor into GradesFirst. Once a student-athlete determines the need for tutorial
assistance in a particular class, he or she will conduct a search within GradesFirst. If your
experience and availability match the student-athlete’s request, he or she will schedule an initial
appointment, and you will be notified via email.
How are tutoring appointments made?
If you have been selected to provide tutorial assistance, the initial session will be set up by the
student-athlete or his or her Academic Counselor, and you will receive an email notification. At
the first session, you may discuss the need for future appointments, and it will be your
responsibility to make sure that all appointments are scheduled within GradesFirst BEFORE
they take place.
How do I record the progress of my student-athlete?
At the end of each tutoring session, you are required to fill out a report. These reports should
take between 5-15 minutes to complete, and they may include progress of the student-athlete,
setbacks, or any issues you may have encountered during the session.
