Section 1 - e-Learning Plan Introduction
Overall vision and mission statement of school (from whole school plan)
In Scoil Mhuire, An Chúil, all members of the school community are united in wishing to provide a holistic education for all the children that attend our
school. The challenge before us is the training and development of all of the child’s faculties: academic, physical, artistic, musical dramatic and spiritual.
We regard education not merely as the accumulation of facts, but as the development of skills and a critical faculty. Recognising the multiplicity of
learning styles, and the child’s innate desire to learn, we aim to provide opportunities for all our children, across a wide variety of academic, sporting and
aesthetic areas.
We wish our school to be an inclusive school, serving the entire community, including those children with special educational needs whose parents wish
them to attend our school. We will advise and support them to the best of our ability. We have a Catholic ethos, but welcome all children of our
community, of all faiths and none. We will respect their beliefs, and expect respect in return.
We wish our school to be a partnership between the Board of Management, staff, parents and children, and we will consult with all of the members of
our community when devising policies, in so far as is practicable.
We wish our school to be an open and welcoming place, where parents, children and teachers respect each other and realise each other’s importance in
the leaning process. We will endeavour to foster and encourage good manners and tolerance for the views of others.
We wish our school to be progressive. We will endeavour as a staff to keep abreast of the latest educational research and teaching methodologies,
selecting those which in our professional views best serve the furthering of our school vision. We welcome suggestions and constructive criticism from
parents, children, management and outside professionals.
This is the shared vision of the Scoil Mhuire community, based on consultation with parents, staff, students and management.
e-Learning vision statement
In Scoil Mhuire we are united in our willingness to learn new skills and develop e-learning skills among the school community. Each teacher has a firm idea of the skills
that we would like the classes under our care to develop. We wish to develop further the already positive attitude to e-learning that exists in our school. It is our
intention that all children leaving the school will have developed basic file management, internet searching, image manipulation and e-mailing skills. It is also our
intention that staff will further develop their knowledge of, and use of ICT in their lesson planning and daily teaching. As a school, we occupy a place between initial
2
and e-enabled on the Roadmap. It is our hope that this plan will put us firmly between the e-enabled and e-confident stages. At the moment, our aims for the children
are as follows:
Infants: Child should be enabled to:
 Switch laptops and desktops on and off in the correct manner.
 Use a mouse correctly for
 locating, selecting and activating.
 Open and close documents
 Perform some basic word-processing e.g. using the Shift+key combination for capitals
Rang 1-3: Child should be enabled to:
 Develop further word-processing skills e.g. text formatting
 Save a document
 Select text, cut, copy and paste text.
 Import images from the computer and the Internet.
 Develop their game playing skills through engaging in carefully selected educational games.
 Launch a web browser.
Rang 4-6: Child should be enabled to:
 Open, close and save files in folders
 Create and name folders
 Use a spreadsheet to create data representations (graphs and charts)
 Put together a project using presentation software, with images and visual/sound effects
 Use internet search engines to obtain information
 Create and send e-mails
 Independently type, edit and print documents
 Take photographs using a digital camera and upload them to a computer
 Navigate social networking sites and the online environment safely
