Grass Mountain Artist-in-Residence (AIR)
一、Goal
To effectively utilize the space, and sustain the workshop as the basis for fine arts,
facilitate the realm conveniently located at Yang Ming National Park with picturesque
environment, draw on the abundant historical resources of the Grass Mountain
Chateau to create scope of dialogue among venue of cultural heritage, ecology, fine
arts, and local residents, so as to provide workspace for artists to conduct creative
activities of multiple nature, bring arts into leisure of common people, and enhance
the effectiveness of the platform for the exchange of culture and arts.

三、Procedure
(一)Open invitation and selection are applied to provide accommodation for
specific range of time so as to enable the artist to conduct creative activity,
performance, or rehearsal. As a group, the artists and artistic groups can
station at No. 91 workshop which is an area for group creativity. The house
artists are obliged to discuss the mandatory open house during designated time
and place as they station here so that the general public can view and exchange
ideas at the workshop.
(二)Production
It contains visual arts such as painting, sculpture, film, documentary, image,
design and new media. In addition, performing arts including dance, music,
composition, traditional drama are welcome. As to literature, cultural creation
business and exhibition organizers are also among the acceptable artistic
categories.
Application
Applying section bringing up cases relevant to culture, venue, ecological environment,
humanistic and historical context, social implication of Yang Ming Mountain is given
priority. Due to the specified location, activities involving mechanism of large-scale
used for severing, or fires are considered improper.
(三)Qualifications
1.Invitation
In general, two individuals or groups, local or abroad, are invited annually.
Only groups composed of less than four members with relevant working or
creative background over three years will be evaluated for invitation.
2.Screening
Despite national origin, individual over 20 or registered groups are eligible.
The annual screening will produce less than three artists or groups formed by
fewer than four members. Three-year working or creative background with
focus on arts is required. Applicants who have not been invited for stationing
in any artistic venue within a year will be given priority.
四、Conditions
(一)Invitation
1.House artists or groups are entitled to station on the spot for more than a week
or up to a month. Approved by the Chateau, applicants may extend the time
specified once only according to the nature of artistic activity.
2.Room and board are provided free of charge by the Chateau as house artists or
groups move in. One room will be made available for accommodation,
workshop or rehearsal.
3.House artists or groups must produce at least one product regardless of media or
scale. The workshop occupied is to be open for touring or idea exchange upon
request. As the term expires, exhibition or performance will be scheduled in
accord with the Chateau activities.
(二)Screening
1.House artists or groups are entitled to station in for no less than a week and no
longer than a month.
2.Cleaning fee at NT$3,000 a week will be used to clean room, workshop or
performing area, utilities included. The payment should be taken care of on
one-time basis before the house artists or groups enter. Those who withdraw
from the plan are not entitled for reimbursement whatsoever.
3.Transportation, food, drink or cost incurred by creative activity will not be
covered by the Chateau.
4.House artists or groups should come up with at least one product regardless of
media or scale. Successful applicants must open workshop for visiting or
exchange upon request. As time expires, artists or artistic groups should
showcase or present their product via performance at the request of the
Chateau.
五、Application Proess
(一)Applications will be solicited between May 1 and June 15 every year for
stationing plan available January through December the following year.
For 2013, the application will be accepted from January 24 to March 8. Applicants
should fill out the standard form provided by the Grass Mountain Chateau.
(二)Application form should be submitted to the designated address (No. 54, Lane
103, Shin-shang S. Road, Section 1, Taipei City 106) via registered mail or
special delivery. Please mark on the envelope enclosed is “Application for
Artistic Workshop at the Grass Mountain Chateau”. No e-mail will be
evaluated.
(三)Please check the posted procedure for details as slight modification may occur.
六、Finalization
(一)A committee of members from five different specialized fields will be
appointed for open screening. Multiple perspectives will be attended to as the
committee is established. Taipei Culture Bureau will come up of a list with 1/3
committee members, the rest will be nominated by the Grass Mountain
Chateau for approval of the sponsors.
(二)After verification of the application materials, the screening committee will
start evaluation. Cases not corresponding to the guidelines may fetch the
application materials according to the instructions given by the Chateau.
Unclaimed materials will be disposed by the Chateau. Postage and
self-addressed envelope may be provided for return delivery as application is
first submitted.
(三)Combined opinions will be taken from the committee members. Before the
committee conference, all members will have the application materials on
hand. During the conference, discussion will be conducted case by case. The
final list is decided by members of the screening committee. If there is no
qualified applicant, no artist or group will have access to the facilities
consequently.
(四)Members of the screening committee should not reveal the process or outcome
of the opening evaluation to avoid arbitrary or unfair judgment. To unsure
independent and fair screening conference, and to respect privacy on the part
of the applicants, the screening conference will not be open to outsiders.
(五)Outcome of the screening process will be announced prior to the end of
September on websites of the Chateau and sponsors. Successful applicants
will be notified via telephone and e-mail.
七、Obligations and rights
(一)Please respect life style and schedule of local residents. Never disturb or violate
the peaceful neighborhood at the expense of mutual relationship with adjacent
communities.
(二)Space made available is ruled by Yang Ming Shan National Park, therefore the
codes involved shall be followed. No fire is permitted, all plants are protected.
Woodcutting or violation of ecological environment is subject to persecution.
(三)No forbidden items, inflammables, explosives, or dangerous objects are
allowed. Any damages incurred on facilities or borrowed items are liable for
cost of repair or replacement.
(四)Agreement reached ahead of time between the artists or artistic groups ought to
be strictly enforced. Any additional device or facility utilized within must have
prior approval from the Chateau. Any case involving change to the structure
and appearance of the Chateau must not be conducted without prior approval
of the Chateau and sponsors of the project.
(五)In house artists or artistic groups should attend to their own products and keep
the environment clean. In case of serious violation or negligence of advice, the
Chateau will immediate void the right of violators to access the Chateau.
(六)Unless otherwise approved, successful applicants, artists or artistic groups
should sign the agreement with the Chateau within a month of notification,
and finish their proposed projects according to the original schedule. Failing to
conform to the aforementioned condition is considered forsaking their right,
and no objection will be attended to.
(七)In house artists or artistic groups are obliged to complete the production, at least
one artifact regardless of media or scale. The product and plan submitted should
be guaranteed that there is no violation of copy right. Any loss or damage
ensuing as a result of the aforementioned violation will be covered by the artists
or artistic groups. No legal responsibility will be claimed by the Chateau. As
the case expires, artists or artistic groups are required to cooperate with the
Chateau in conducting exhibition or performance.
(八)In house artists or artistic groups ought to cooperate with the Chateau in artistic
and cultural promotion, such as open activities, community exhibition,
performance, lecture, or workshop of educational or sharing purposes. Any
open house for touring or exchange during specific time should be executed
after negotiation with the Chateau pertaining to its contents and formats.
(九)The venue should be recovered upon expiration or in case of early withdrawal.
All personal belongings should be removed accordingly; otherwise, they will
be disposed as abandoned objects. The Chateau is not obligated to remind the
owner and it is entitled to dispose the items left behind. Artists or artistic
groups will be liable for any cost or damage incurred pertaining to the
disposal.
(十)Insurance will be provided by the Chateau to prevent liability in case of disaster
or accident. Neither property, assess belonging to artists, artistic groups, or
visitors will be insured, nor will their personal health.
(十一)Smoking or betel nut chewing are strictly forbidden in the Chateau.
