WEATHER MAP DICTATION
Objectives:
-to introduce topical vocabulary
-to develop students’ cognitive skills
-to develop students’ listening comprehensions skills;
-to encourage pupils to use newspaper as a source of information.
Materials and equipment: Oxford Wordpower Dictionary (for intermediate
learners of English),weather forecasts with maps, a set of weather maps of
Europe,Australia,Asia and Americas, copies of the enlarged weather map(one for
each student(,the map symbols in their positions(one for each student).
Procedure
I Greeting. Introductory. Talk.
T: Morning everyone. Glad to see you here today. What’s the topic of today’s
lesson? Well. Look at the blackboat.
The words on the blackboard:
The climate at a certain place and time, how much wind, rain, sunshine, etc
there is and how hot or cold it is.
T: So, what are we going to talk about? Yes, that’s right. It’s weather.
There is a popular saying: Rain before seven, fine before eleven .
II BRAINSTORMING
T: And where do we find information about weather? That’s right. Weather
forecast is really helpful.And what words will we need to describe weather?
(With the whole class the teacher elicits all the vocabulary and language
they would expect to find in newspaper weather forecasts, and writes
the ideas on the board. This activity is also used to teach new language
related to weather forecasts and to pre-teach any necessary new
vocabulary.)
Suggested vocabulary:
Plenty of sunshine, partial sunshine, mixture of sunshine and blustery showers,
heavy showers, steady rains, drizzly, scattered, thunderstorms, isolated
thunderstorms.
III WORKING OUT WEATHER FORECASTS

Teacher distributes copies of the weather forecast and map and goes through it
with them, pointing out how the text is translated into the visual medium of a
map; focuses on the choice of language to be found in weather forecast,
particularly the use of Simple Future tense as well as –ing forms.
Plenty of sunshine/mostly sunny
Partial sunshine
Partly cloudy/mix of sun and clouds/more clouds than sun
Rain/showers/chance of rain/light rain
Cloudy/most cloudy
Few snow showers/chance of snow/light snow

Students are given a set of maps of Europe, Australia, Asia and Americas. Working
in pairs they ask questions about the weather conditions in different regions and
give information using weather maps.
IV WEATHER -MAP DICTATION
Each student is given a copy of the enlarged weather map.
T: You are going to listen to a weather forecast, and while listening, you should
not write the text but should draw in the appropriate symbols in the correct
places.
WEATHER FORECAST
Rain over Northern Ireland and Scotland is replaced by a mixture of sunshine and
blustery showers for a time.The best of any sunshine is in eastern Scotland with
the heaviest showers in the west, and steadier rain returns to Northern Ireland
before evening.England and Wels are mostly cloudy with rain spreading to many
areas, but the heaviest is in the north.In the south –west it is drizzly and the
south-east stays dry and quite bright for a while.
(After students have written the dictation, show them the map with the
symbols: their positions)
T: Now you are given a copy of a gapped text.try to rewrite the exact wording of
the weather forecast. During this writing stage you are allowed to refer to the
map.
