Taking steps to raise funds to help beat
heart disease
It’s that time of year again in the Western Isles when local people are being encouraged to take part in
the popular British Heart Foundation Walks.
Known as ‘Walk the Western Isles Way’, the walks take part across the Western Isles from Lewis to
Barra. The walks have been extremely popular in recent years, with participants enjoying the fresh air,
camaraderie and exercise and, in the process, much needed funds were raised for the British Heart
Foundation.
NHS Western Isles is keen to encourage local communities across the Western Isles to follow in the
footsteps of BHF walkers of previous years, and get involved in the sponsored walks on Saturday,
September 29, from 11am.
The Lewis Walk starts at Porter’s Lodge in Stornoway, the Harris Walk starts from MacGilvray Centre,
the Uist Walk starts from Howmore Church and the Barra Walk starts from the Car Park past the old
school in Vatersay. Each of the walks are approximately four miles, with the exception of the Uist walk,
which is around six miles.
Walks can be sponsored, or a donation given. Application forms are available but participants can also
just attend on the day. All funds raised will be donated to the nation’s heart charity, the British Heart
Foundation, which is totally committed to preventing people's lives being devastated by heart disease.
Entry forms can be collected from the reception area of any one of the Western Isles hospitals, or from
any Health Promotion Department base. Alternatively contact Janet Tierney, Western Isles Hospital on
01851 704704.
