INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
Catalog Description:
11 - Intercultural Communication
3 units
Intercultural communication with a focus on the analysis and comparisons of message perception and
transmission in interactions between people from different cultures. Emphasis on practical application
of skills for effective communication between people of different domestic and international cultures.
3 hours.
Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. describe the basic communication process;
2. identify and demonstrate effective critical listening skills;
3. define culture and related terms
a. intracultural communication
b. intercultural communication;
4. analyze the dynamics of communication between people with different cultural heritages (both
international and domestic);
5. identify diverse Western and non-Western cultural orientations, values, and behaviors;
6. describe contemporary communication networks that link the United States politically, economically,
and socially with other countries;
7. analyze and describe how culture influences communication in both Western and non-Western
contexts;
8. identify unique historical experiences that shape cultural communication differences;
9. identify similarities and differences in communication styles that are unique to particular international
and domestic cultures

10. determine when cultural issues influence communication in developing interpersonal relationships;
11. demonstrate the basic knowledge of how to transcend Western and non-Western cultural and ethnic
differences to build "community;"
12. identify and demonstrate specific communication skills necessary for intercultural communication

b. demonstrate improve intercultural communications skills.
