Description
Pre-test: One week prior to giving the lesson, pass out the 9th grade PEP
pre- test. Have students complete and collect. Collate the information.
Determine information that the majority of the students know (this will
help guide you on what activities to include in the lesson and where to “take
time”). Keep the results to compare to your post-test results. Note those
students who may need extra help with the information.
1) Warm-Up (10 minutes): Introduce yourself, describe what a school
counselor is and what you do.
Explain computer lab behavior/performance expectations.
Introduce Naviance:
WHAT IS NAVIANCE? Denver Public Schools subscribes to a college
and career planning resource called Naviance Family Connection.
Students are able to access the college-planning website where they
can keep records of their activities, grades, and college and/or career
interests. They are able to compare GPA, SAT & ACT scores, and other
statistics, to actual historical data from other students from the same
school who have applied in the past. Naviance Family Connection also
facilitates communication between counselors and students. Students
can access Naviance, once they know their school’s Naviance internet
address, his or her own username and password, anywhere there is
internet access and continue their college and career planning on their
own.
If possible, show this You Tube video about Naviance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8CFuruP08s
Students will continue to use Naviance throughout high school.
2) Lesson (45 minutes or more):
Pass out each student’s Career Cluster Goal and Four-Year Planning
Tool. Tell them they will be entering this information into Naviance.
Pass out ‘Career Cluster Goal on Naviance’ how-to instructions to
every student. You will need to direct the students to your
school’s Naviance internet address.
Students should follow the instructions on the handout and enter
their Career Cluster Goal and the type of post-secondary institution
they plan on attending.
Counselor to walk around and assist as needed.
Next, pass out ‘Course Planner on Naviance’. Students should
follow the instructions on the handout and enter their course plan
from their Four-Year Planning Tool.
