1 - 3 March 2013 Galerija Vartai at ART London will present five artists from Lithuania. More than 120 galleries
will present artists from all over the world at the first edition of ART13 London. The art fair seeks to attract
collectors through its rich program, global ambition and the emerging talents of the art world.
At the Galerija Vartai stand No I5 works by Žilvinas Landzbergas, Žilvinas Kempinas, Mindaugas Lukošaitis will
be presented. Also, young artists recently noticed by the gallery, Arnas Anskaitis and Tim Kliukoit will show their
objects and photography. Apart from the gallery stand, Žilvinas Kempinas’s kinetic sculpture Fountain (2011)
will be showcased at the projects section of the Fair.
Arnas Anskaitis (b. 1988) works in the field of photography, video, performance and conceptual art. The young
artist was noticed by art critics and curators in the last year of his studies at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. His
originality among his generation comes from not only his powerful imagination, which the artist puts to work
when it comes to choosing the most appropriate media for his project but also from his philosophical approach
and particular interest in language, as well as the tension between the sound of a word and its meaning.
Žilvinas Kempinas (b. 1969) is best known for his perception and space-altering installations, which invite the
viewer to participate in the art event as it unfolds. Using magnetic tape as the main medium for his installations,
Kempinas' art acquires multiple points of interpretation. Magnetic tape at once becomes a ready-made, while its
use addresses the laws of physics and phenomenology. Through the concept of the line in space the artist’s
works expand the boundaries of the medium of drawing. Kempinas represented Lithuania with the installation
TUBE at the Venice Biennale 53rd in 2009. Recently he was awarded the Lithuanian National Culture and Art
Prize.
Tim Kliukoit (b. 1984) constructs room-sized wall-mounted objects from scavenged or gifted items or trinkets
acquired from flea markets. These objects largely depend on how the viewer perceives them and his/her ability
to feel the shape and facture through that perception. Tim Kliukoit draws inspiration for his objects from the
moments of intuitively perceived meaning. Such moments can be called casual miracles: nothing of importance
happens, but one begins to see things in a different way.
Žilvinas Landzbergas (b. 1979) His artistic practice is concerned with storytelling through the medium of
sculpture and three-dimensional installation, where the viewer becomes both a participant and a spectator – the
narrator and character in the story. Combining in his work elements of science fiction and his reflections on the
consumer society, the power of information, and modern culture, Landzbergas also at the same time refers to
our subconscious longing for a more natural way of existence.
Mindaugas Lukošaitis (b. 1981) mostly uses a classical academic style of drawing. This formal method is merely
a stance conveying the artists’ unique sense of ‘realism’. He sees the medium of drawing as a set of contours
and symbols instilled through a vital and authentic line. His concept of drawing cannot be made to fit into the
rules of formal and alienating games. It is more primitive, brutal, physical, realistic, and dreamlike. Lukošaitis
was chosen to represent Lithuania in the 26th São Paulo Biennial. His series of drawings are in the collections
of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and the Art Vectors Collection.
