Non Calculator Tests: Teacher Guide
The organisation of the materials
This material consists of four sets of 36 non calculator tests, with solutions. Each
set is aimed at a different level, one for each of years S1 through to S4. These
are organised into folders named Noncalc1, Noncalc2, Noncalc3 and Noncalc4.
Timings
Each test is stored as an individual PowerPoint slide show with 10 slides, one for
each question. The timings are set automatically for each test. At levels 1 and 2
each slide will be displayed for two minutes, giving a total of 20 minutes for each
test. At levels 3 and 4 each slide is displayed automatically for three minutes,
giving 30 minutes for each test. Each slide displays a clock counting down the
allotted time (but please note that the clock does not change until one
minute has elapsed).

Recording results
A record sheet is available which can be used to record pupils’ results in the
tests.
Using the materials
The material in each set of tests is relevant to pupils following a Standard Grade
course leading to Standard Grade Credit level exams in fourth year or to those
following an Intermediate 2 course in fourth year or in fifth year. All the material
for S1 and S2 would be suitable for all pupils including those following the
General level syllabus.
The material covers all the work that pupils would be expected to know in the
final SQA Non Calculator exam paper and could be used by teachers for revision
purposes in preparation for this exam paper.
Adapting the materials
There are two PowerPoint templates included in the resource. One has a twominute timing, the other a three-minute timing, so that teachers can create their
own timed questions in PowerPoint. The templates could be used for any NQ
subject requiring timed questions.
