How to use the A-Z Subject Catalogue to the HRBKA Library
Number Key: Numbers written in normal print like this: 254 refer to routine books. Numbers in
bold like this 254 are recommended as reasonably up to date, have decent coverage of the topic,
and are clearly written. Numbers like this: 254(136-145), tell you that only part of the book, pages
136 to 145, are relevant to the topic, not the whole of the book. Numbers struck through thus
have been destroyed by the librarians as being so out of date as to be misleading and of no historical
value.
N: The letter N refers to the Nutshell series and where N occurs the numbers which follow are not
page numbers but refer to the Series Sequence of numbers. The first page of each of the four ring
binders which are numbered 450 on the library shelves lists the complete Nutshell Number
Sequence.
Numbers: The numbers, such as 254, refer to the number on the stem of each book in the library.
Books are arranged in acquisition number order on the shelves. Low numbers (e.g. 25) are usually
‘old’ acquisitions and high numbers (e.g. 460) are usually ‘recent ’ acquisitions. This usually gives an
indication of publication date. However, occasionally a ‘new acquisition’ will not be a ‘new
publication’, so care must be taken with assumptions.
Library catalogues arranged by ‘acquisition number’ and ‘author A-Z’ and ‘subject (broad)
category’ and ‘subject A-Z (detailed) index’ are available for you to download. In addition a ‘Quick
Guide’ descriptive series of leaflets is being developed. The HRBKA Library Quick Guide to the Web,
is a useful ‘out of library’ search companion to this ‘in library’ document. Just ask the librarian to
email any of the above to you as an attachment, should you wish.
General Texts: Texts which provide a general overview of beekeeping are to be found under
‘Beekeeping Manuals’.
Index Construction: HRBKA Library Antique books are not included in this index, (but are in the
catalogues mentioned above) nor are articles from Journals to which we subscribe. The same applies
to BBKA News and our own The Apiarist. The index of a journal is best searched and accessed as
described in The HRBKA Library Quick Guide to the Web.
Feedback: In order to keep this subject index up to date, the librarian would be grateful for
feedback, especially when errors are detected. Topics for inclusion, together with the book name
and page reference are also welcome, so the index can grow ever more helpful for us all.
Just Ask: If you cannot easily find information on a topic of interest to you, please do not hesitate
to ask the librarian.
