Dear friends and colleagues,
We are pleased to be the hosts for one of the most important scientific meetings in the medical field, the III World
Congress of the Endoscopic Surgery of the Brain, Skull Base and Spine - Rhinology 2008, jointly sponsored by the
Brazilian Neurosurgical, ENT and Rhinological Societies. We will bring together at this one single event experts
in skull base surgery and rhinology, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, radiologists, anatomists, and craniofacial
surgeons from all over the world. The meeting will take place in São Paulo, Brazil, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, from
May 22 to 24, 2008. Although the majority of the scientific program has been divided into sessions specific for
each field, to be held in separate rooms, all the congress participants are invited to take advantage of any of the
events in both Rhinology 2008 and the World Congress during the meeting.
The scientific program will emphasize emerging and controversial topics, as well as reinforcing current concepts
and treatment modalities.
We believe that this will be a unique opportunity for those who seek awareness of new horizons and limits, and
clinical maturity based on these new boundaries.
We count on you to join us for this very special occasion!

SIMPOSIO INTERNACIONAL
DETECCION, DIAGNOSTICO Y TRATAMIENTO PRECOZ DE LA SORDERA
EN LA INFANCIA
EARLY IDENTIFICATION, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENTOF DEAFNESS IN
INFANTS
MADRID 21, 22 DE FEBRERO DEL 2008
Salón de Actos Fundación Ramón Areces
Vitruvio, nº 5 28006 Madrid
Introducción
The majority of children have hearing ability from birth and they learn to speak by imitating familiar voices and the voices of people
around them. But this is not always the case. In fact, 2 to 3 children out of every 1000 are born with partial or total hearing loss and
there are others who lose their hearing during the first years of life. For these children with hearing impairment, it is essential to perform
a diagnosis and to begin treatment by the age of 6 months, so that they will be able to develop their
language and speaking skills in the same way and in the same time-frame as children with normal hearing abilities. There are hereditary
and acquired risk factors for deafness that make it possible to detect and treat it in the first months of life, preventing as much as possible
its effects and repercussions. Unfortunately half of the children born with hearing loss do not present any of the associated risk factors
that enable its early identification and treatment, which is why the effect of its belated
diagnosis on speaking and language skills can create permanent repercussions which affect the cognitive development and growth
process of the child.
The importance that infant deafness poses as a health problem has been assessed by national and international organisms and scientific
societies. In 1999, the Congressional Plenary approved, through a motion, the elaboration of a National Plan for the Prevention of Infant
Deafness. The Ministry of Health then approved the Program for Early Detection of Hearing Loss for newborns in all of the Autonomous
Communities, which is currently in different stages of implementation. These programs establish protocols to identify and diagnose all
newborns suffering deafness in order to begin the most appropriate early treatment. This necessitates the training of professionals in
detection, diagnosis and treatment of infant deafness.
Introduction
The Ramon Areces Foundation, sensitive to this health problem in infants, contributes with its cooperation and sponsorship to gather a
group of international experts to carry out an update on such an enormously important issue
regarding the development and future of children. This Symposium will be an excellent opportunity for paediatricians, ear, nose and
throat specialists, nurses, hearing aid specialists and manufacturers, speech therapists, etc., to approach, in a multidisciplinary way, the
important challenge of a truly early detection, diagnosis and treatment of infant deafness.

Committee Charge: The Board of Directors has charged the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Ad Hoc
Group with giving advice, when requested by the Board or its representatives, on ways to
communicate better with otolaryngologists and allied health personnel in Latin America and the
Iberian Peninsula, by:
 Encouraging attendance at the AAO-HNS Foundation’s Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO and
other meetings;
 Increasing recruitment and retention of new members from Latin America and the Iberian
Peninsula, including International Fellows, Members, and Resident Members;
 Conveying the AAO-HNS/F message to Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking audiences,
including through translated materials on the Web, at meetings, and marketing materials;
 Providing advice with regard to areas of maximal educational interest for the Spanish- and
Portuguese-speaking constituents of the AAO-HNS Foundation; and
 Collaborating with the International Otolaryngology Committee in its commitment to serve the
Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking International Corresponding Societies.
Current Year Highlights:

As the official liaison with the Pan-American Association, publicized the
Academy’s activities, especially the Annual Meeting, to the 14 component PanAmerican societies

Additional Discussions
1. Dr. Casiano called the meeting to order at 12:30 pm. The committee reviewed and affirmed the
charge and approved the past minutes
2. The group gave advice on the annual meeting, including improving online access to disclosure
forms online, adding email addresses to the phone and fax contact information on the website,
giving an option to contact in Spanish and respond promptly. There was discussion about fees for
residents and medical students, and the differential between early and late registration fees. More
Spanish-speakers are needed to staff the Academy booth. Dr. Encarnacion observed that the
Academy should be careful of room sizes—if the topic is popular, people should pre-register.
3. The group also addressed abstract submissions for the Academy meeting program. Consensus was
that advice is needed for submitting oral presentations such selecting presenters, describing
research methodology, and scientific validity. The group recommended a training seminar on
abstract writing, along the lines of Dr. Rosenfeld’s miniseminar on writing for the journal.
4. SPAG Miniseminar Proposal: abstracts on otology and cosmetic results of ethnic nose were
declined. Dr. Koltai encouraged proposals on hot topics. Dr. Bross suggested reserving one
miniseminar per year in Spanish, such as “ESS in Latin America.” Dr. Casiano invited colleagues
to send their abstracts to him for suggestions. He advised topics that will draw Americans, such as
unusual rhinologic diseases and infectious otologic diseases. Dr. Bernal questioned why some
miniseminars are repeated from previous years, and asked how do they are evaluated.
5. Dr. Cobo has been named as the Pan-American Association representative to the Board of
Governors, and Dr. Ruiz has been nominated as Vice-Chair of SPAG.
6. Reporting on the 2008 Pan-American Congress, Dr. Casiano noted that Academy Joint meetings
could use the Academy logo in promotional material. The Pan-American Congress booth in the
OTO EXPO has applications for instruction courses. Multinational pharmaceutical support and
other corporate support is being sought to help speakers with their travel costs and hotels. Dr
Stolovitzky noted that there is a significant shortfall in corporate financial support of joint
meetings.
7. The committee adjourned at 1:45 pm.
Next meeting: September 21-24, Chicago, Illinois (date, time, place to be decided)

Academy Joint Meeting with Argentinean Federation (F.A.S.O.)
Hector E. Ruiz, MD
Vice-chair, Spanish- and Portuguese speaking
Advisory Group (SPAG)
It was a great pleasure for me, as president of the Meeting , to host the second joint meeting between
Federacion Argentina de Otorrinolaringologia (FASO)
and the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery in city, Rosario, Argentina,
August 2-4, 2007.More than 2,000 Argentinean professionals
and 230 from other Latin American countries attended. Among the 31 international speakers who
contributed to the meeting’s high scientific level, the Academy was
well represented by past president Antonio de la Cruz, MD, Richard M. Rosenfeld, MD, MPH (Journal
-editor-in-chief), Roy R. Casiano, MD, (SPAG Chair),
Moises A. Arriaga, MD, Michael Friedman, MD, and Marcella R. Bothwell, MD. The Pan-American
Association gave its support to this meeting, which included
speakers from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile,Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and
Venezuela. During the meeting, there were different clinical symposia
in conjunction with specialty societies of Rosario, including those of cardiology, neurology, and
pediatrics, on topics such as pediatric otology, nasal disease, snoring, and
sleep apnea. In addition to presenting 75 panels, 38 lectures, 94 free papers, and 20 posters, we also
introduced six books from national and international authors. We
began organizing these joint meetings ,with the idea of keeping in contact with our professional
colleagues in the Academy. My goal was to create a Spanish- and
Portuguese-speaking Advisory Group (SPAG) to consolidate this relationship.
The first joint meeting with FASO took place in Mar del Plata, Argentina, November 2005, and we
hope to continue this alliance in order to learn from
our professional colleagues and friends.
10 a 12 DE ABRIL DE 2008 – SAN DIEGO – ESTADOS UNIDOS
X International Cochlear Implant Conference.
www.CIC2008.com
It is with great pleasure we announce the 10th International Conference on Cochlear Implants and
Other Implantable Auditory Technologies, to be held April 10 – 12, 2008, in San Diego, California,
hosted by House Ear Institute of Los Angeles, known for their clinical expertise, groundbreaking
research and pioneering innovations in the field of auditory implants in both adults and children.
In the two decades since the first meeting in 1987, in Duren, Germany, directed by Paul Banfai, a
variety of professionals have made many advances in the treatment of hearing loss. These advances
have helped not only those patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss using cochlear
implants, but also patients with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss and patients with
conductive hearing losses to obtain a level of function better than they did using conventional hearing
aids. The title of this conference reflects the inclusion of the technologies that have benefited patients
with hearing loss.

“2°INTERNATIONAL SPRING COURSE ON FUNCTIONAL
AND AESTHETIC SURGERY OF THE NOSE”
Castel San Pietro Terme-Bologna- (Italy) between 5th of May and 7th of May
2008.
All the relevant information about scientific programme and exhibitors/sponsor redemption will be
found on the course website: www.springcourse2008.com For any further information please feel free

Dear Friends and Colleagues
It is my great pleasure to introduce the 2nd International Spring Course on Functional and Aesthetic
Surgery of the Nose, which will be held in Castel San Pietro Terme from 5 th to 7 th May, 2008. This
scientific event follows the previous one preformed in 2006, whose satisfied results have stimulated us
to carry on and present this new edition of the Course.
The Scientific Program will cover the art of nasal surgery in-depth. Distinguished national and
international Faculty members will demonstrate their extraordinary practical expertise, discussing from
the fundamentals, to the latest advancement in the field, thus emphasizeing the typical key areas of
this complex surgical procedure. In this way, all the participants, both experienced and beginner
surgeons, will be able to brush up on the fundamentals of nasal surgery refining their operative
techniques.
The Course will go on two sessions per day:
in the morning some operations will be carried out live surgery by world-famous surgeons, who
will talk about the up-to-date techniques of functional and aesthetic nose surgery
in the afternoon no less stimulating, theory will have priority over practice, all participants largely
debating various issues by Masterly Lessons and
Round-Table conferences.
The conference will be held in English and Italian language with simultaneous translation.
The Course will take place in Castel San Pietro Terme inside the new Congress Centre Artemide, a short
distance away from the main hotels.
The location offers all the advantage of a small town but has all the facilities and services of a large
city. Besides the scientific commitments, all companions can enjoy their stay both visiting the beautiful
surrounding countryside of the Sillaro Valley and playing sports at the Golf Club, in the swimming pool,
or at the Tennis Club.
With the hope that this Course will be as successful as the previous one, I very much look forward to
welcoming a great many of you in Castel San Pietro Terme in Spring 2008.
