Paragraphing
Achieving text cohesion with linking words and phrases
Examples of student work (group JAL-KOV)
To begin with, please consult the examples and exercises in your
Reader 2010/11, p 69.
Below you will find four examples of the text from Task 2. Read
them carefully, paying attention to how your colleagues ordered
the sentences and used linking words and phrases to express
their point.
For comparison purposes I have colour-coded the sentences and
it is easy to see how different authors use one and the same
sentence in different places. For instance, all authors agree on
the order of appearance for the first three sentences. However,
the remaining three (green, red and purple) they chose to order
differently. You should also pay attention to the way your
colleagues use linking words since this justifies their decisions
and reveals the logic of the paragraph to you.
Enjoy!
