(Entry 2) (600/7457/7)
What does this qualification cover?
Learners will have English abilities, knowledge and understanding to carry out simple reading, writing
and speaking, listening and communication skills with guidance. On completion of this unit the learner
will be able to apply knowledge of a simple range of spelling, punctuation and grammar rules to read
and understand individual words and sentences. The learner will be able to recognise high frequency
words using phonic and graphic knowledge and spelling patterns, as well as be able to identify
adverbials in instructions. Where required, the learner will also be able to use a simplified dictionary to
find words.
Who is this qualification designed for?
This qualification is designed for those who need to improve their knowledge and skills in English. This
could be, in one or more specific skill area up to level 2, so that learners can function more effectively
in their homes, in their communities and at work. These qualifications provide a unit-based approach
that can stand alone or be part of a wider programme. Achievement of individual qualifications
supports learners’ progress towards an appropriate level 2 English qualification (GCSE or Functional
Skills). The individual qualifications allow learners to target specific gaps in their knowledge at a
particular level which supports their progress towards the appropriate level 2 qualification (GCSE or
Functional Skills). Learners who ultimately aim for a Functional Skills or a GCSE qualification may
have struggled with English skills throughout their lives and will therefore need to be supported and
motivated through the achievement of smaller, more focused qualifications which provide them with the
specific skills and confidence to continue learning and achieving en route to their ultimate aim. Once a
learner is secure in all the underpinning skills filled by OCR’s Cambridge Progression English units,
learners can then progress to a Functional Skills qualification or level 2 or GCSE.
What could this qualification lead to?
This qualification has been designed specifically to support progression to further learning and work. It
is based on the National Adult Literacy standards. This provides the necessary rigour and flexibility to
support a wide range of progression opportunities in line with the needs of individual learners. This
includes progression towards Functional Skills and GCSE.
