TBC Philosophy and
Guidelines__________________________________________________________
TBC Philosophy
Open to boys in 4th - 8th grade and girls in 5th - 8th grade that plan on attending Wauwatosa West High
School.. They must also meet one or both of the following; have a Wauwaosa West address, or are going to
a Wauwaosa West HS feeder school. The Wauwatosa West Junior Trojan Basketball Club emphasizes
coaching and playing basketball to develop fundamentally sound, skilled youth players, while playing in a
competitive environment.
The Junior Trojans are 4th-8th grade boys teams and 5th-8th grade girls teams based upon tryout
assessments. The boys will play 16 competitive league games in the WYBL(Wisconsin Youth Basketball
League) and in 1-3 tournaments per season. The girls season will consist of 6-8 tournaments. Both boys
and girls games are played against teams in Southeastern Wisconsin.
Games are typically held Saturdays and/or Sundays. Practices are typically up to an hour and a half, twice a
week at a Wauwatosa School District gym. The season begins with practice in late October and ends in
early March. The Trojan Basketball Club also encourages youth boys and girls to participate in their Middle
School Basketball Seasons.
Player and team placement are determined through required Tryouts in September. The Trojan Basketball
Club is a “select” club and one or more teams, are formed per grade level.
Evaluations/Tryout Process

During the month of September, each grade will have 2 nights of tryouts. The tryouts will be set up
as follows to ensure the most fairness in team placement
o Tryout will consist of fundamental passing, ball handling, and shooting drills. Evaluators
will rate on a predetermined scale to determine separation
o Tryouts will be independently evaluated and picked. Coaches will not pick their own teams
but may have some input.
o Station drill scores, scrimmage assessments, and work ethic and attitude evaluations will
all be used to finalize player placements.

Those who don’t attend all evaluation dates will not be guaranteed a spot on any TBC team. If a
player makes both it does not guarantee a spot over someone who attended just one tryout.

Those unable to participate in any tryout evaluations due to a sudden health issue will be evaluated
with coaches’ input based upon prior year TBC evaluations if those players played in TBC program
during the prior year. Those players which didn’t play in TBC program during the prior year will be
considered to be placed on the proper team based upon final decisions by evaluators and
reference checks of those who have more knowledge on players’ abilities from other programs
played in other than TBC. (NOTE: sudden health issues consist of broken limbs, sprained
ligaments, or other health issues needing medical attention. Sudden health issues other than
broken limbs will need a note from a doctor indicating requirements to miss tryout sessions.)
Coaching Philosophy
The overall Club and coaching philosophy is defined by our Board with guidance from the Wauwatosa West
High School Varsity coaches, Chad Stelse(boys) and Ashley Imperiale(girls). The Club stresses the
development of players, fundamentals, and coaching strategies that are consistent with the Wauwatosa
West High School program.
Each team should have the goal to incorporate drills; terminology; and game strategies into their practice
and game approach. Ultimately, we want to develop players in order to help them make a smooth transition
to the Wauwatosa West High School Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball programs.
It is highly recommended that two adults be present at each practice for Club teams. One coach and one
parent/guardian are acceptable if two or more coaches cannot be in attendance at the same time.
Individuals interested in coaching will be required to complete the online Coaching Application. Complete
background checks will be conducted on all coaches once they are selected for either a Head Coach or
Assistant Coach position.

The Club will require its coaches to sign and abide by a “Coaches Code of Conduct.” The code of conduct
concepts should be incorporated into team communications, practice plans, game strategies and coaching
philosophies. The Code of Conduct provides details in these key areas:
• Be patient
• Promote a positive atmosphere
• Playing time is earned and coaches make those determinations
• Respect the authority of the referees
• Display and encourage good sportsmanship
• Focus on the fundamentals
• Focus on defense
• Understand the rules
• Be everyone’s coach
• Disciplinary actions pertaining to Technical Fouls
• Take care of the facilities
It is highly recommended that anyone selected to coach (head or assistant) with the Club should attend any
coaches clinics made available by the High School Varsity Coach.
Parent Meeting
It is required for all coaches to have some sort of “informational parent meeting” with all parents/guardians of
players on his/her team. At this meeting, coaches will review the Club philosophies, their coaching
philosophies, and their expectations on commitments of players and parents. This is a great opportunity to
discuss team goals and to determine additional tournaments, etc.
It is the goal of the club to maintain well informed and involved parents. Throughout the year, the Club will
monitor team success by occasionally facilitating discussion with parents regarding the team, coaches, and
atmosphere.
If you prefer to have a team manager/representative to handle communications, etc., request a parent
volunteer.
Playing Time
We play to compete. There are no guarantees of playing time. TBC is ultimately a competitive club team and
our goal is to give everyone a positive basketball experience. Teams are not based on an equal playing time
format. The ideal objective is for all team members to play in games, with the intent for all to share in playing
time, but predicated on the game. It is determined at the coaches’ discretion. Playing time will be evaluated
not only on skill/talent but also on practice attendance, work effort, attitude at both practice and games, and
overall spirit. In summary, fair playing time does not mean equal playing time. If you have concerns or
questions about your child’s playing time, please talk to your coach about it, they are there to help but
please remember our coaches are not required to guarantee any playing time. It is recommended that all
players that abide by the player’s code of conduct and participate regularly should have opportunities to play
and earn additional playing time. The Trojan Basketball Club is a developmental club and players develop at
different ages and also based on their individual skill work. Being a Jr. Trojan Basketball Player is an honor,
not everyone can get a spot in the club.
If a player is not following the player’s code of conduct and team’s expectations, then playing time in games
can be reduced; however, it is recommended that you:
1. Discuss the situation and potential outcome with player;
2. Address the situation with parents/guardians; and
3. Apprise the appropriate TBC assigned Grade Representative.
The Club focuses on teaching basketball fundamentals and developing all players within the program. The
Club must also focus on fair competition, good sportsmanship, and attainment of success.

Practices
Practice times are pre-determined by the Club scheduler and are based on the availability of gym times.
Each team receives approximately 45 hours per season of practice time. Practices will take place at
Wauwatosa School District Gyms. Practice times may vary, but you can count on the younger teams
(4th/5th/6th) beginning earlier in the evening (as early as 5:30 p.m.) and the older teams (7 th/8th) ending as
late as 9:30 p.m. In addition, some teams will have practices that are shared with another team. Lengths of
practices will be up to 1.5 hours.
Practice schedules will be posted on the Club’s website – www.tbcbasketball.org – and will include day;
date; time; and location. TBC encourages players to play for their middle school teams also and it is
possible to do both. There will be times when academics or multiple practices on the same day become an
issue and for this reason, participation in practice for 6 th, 7th and 8th grade teams is at the discretion of the
player’s parent/guardian in accordance with their individual schedule and demands. Coaches only ask that
they be informed when a practice will be missed.
The Club realizes that conflicts may exist with other events – such as Packer/Badger games; band/choir
events; religion classes; family events – but scheduling around these is nearly impossible for every team.
Handling Practice Conflicts
If coaches decide not to use a scheduled practice time, please notify the TBC Scheduler as unused practice
time can be refunded if completed with prior notice or can be redistributed to another team.
Additional Practices
Requests can be made for additional practice time through the TBC court scheduler, but are often not
fulfilled due to limited court availability.
Practice Locations
Teams will be practicing at Wauwatosa School District Gyms.
If you are planning on holding a scrimmage during your practice time with a team outside of our Club, you
must first notify the scheduler of your intent.
Basketballs & Equipment
Each team/coach is provided with the following equipment:





5 basketballs
1 carry bag for basketballs
1 orange medical kit with bandages, wraps, cold pack, etc.
2 additional rolls of white athletic tape
2 additional cold packs

Coaches are responsible for this equipment and are expected to return it at season-end. Keep in mind, that
basketballs are easily misplaced, lost and stolen from practices and games. Basketballs are an expense
($30-$40 per basketball) that we try not to incur annually, so please keep a watchful eye on them. TBC may
charge you for balls not returned at end of season.
Also, please do not write on the basketballs.
If you prefer to have additional basketballs, you can purchase your own – 4th, 5th and 6th grades use the
28.5” basketball and 7th/8th use a regulation-size ball.
Uniforms
Uniforms (shorts/reversible jerseys) are included in the club fee. Players are allowed to reuse uniforms from
prior year, if they still fit the player and are in good shape.(unless the club implements a uniform change in a
given year where all will be required to upgrade). The warm up “shooting shirts” will be purchased annually.
Undershirts or Under Armor worn under uniforms must match the color of the uniform (i.e. black under black
and white under white). This is a WIAA rule which will be enforced by referees.
Teamwear Apparel
Trojan Basketball Club Apparel will be sold during the TBC season as a fundraiser. More information will be
shared at the time of the orders.
Game day Functions
Scorer’s table
Supplying a volunteer to be timekeeper or official scorebook -- is the responsibility of each team. Coaches or
team managers should set this volunteer schedule for the season prior to the start of the season.
Reporting Scores
By Monday evening following the weekend boy’s games, you should report your scores to the WYBL(Please
report your team name; opponent; indicate home team; and final score), or TBC girl’s coordinator for Girls
games..
Tournaments

All TBC boy’s teams qualify for the WYBL end-of-year tournament scheduled for end of February or
early March. 4th - 8th grade teams are seeded by records during the seasons and re-aligned into the
appropriate division and level-of-play with sites to be announced.

The Club will not reimburse TBC teams for tournaments they participate in above the number of
club assigned tournaments. Extra tournaments are the responsibility of the coaches and players’
families. Many teams will collect an additional up-front fee per player to cover the costs for extra
tournaments.
