B Objectives
1. What is the main purpose for this course?


To provide students with a better understanding of the English sentence structure
(Syntax).
To enable students to understand Transformational Generative Syntax and the
significant generalizations of its application to English grammar.
To synergise a modern classification of syntactic and lexical categories,



To identify the types and patterns of English phrases and sentences.
To analyze English phrases and sentences in the form of syntactic tree diagrams showing their
linear and hierarchical structure.
To enable them to analyze syntactically ambiguous phrases and sentences.
To apply the phrase structure rules and X-bar rules to English phrases and sentences.
To enable them to apply the transformational rules to English sentences.



