Cotswold Hills Geopark
A Geopark is an area containing geological heritage of international
significance, which has developed a sustainable development strategy
with a strong management structure. Once established as a Geopark it
is possible to apply for support from a European funding programme to
aid further development. The European Geopark Network is now assisted
by UNESCO, who participate fully in its work and has a right-of-veto
concerning all decisions made by the network.
The advantage of becoming part of the established network would
entitle the use of the registered “European Geopark” brand therefore
benefiting from promotional tools such as websites, magazines and
open up opportunities to obtain EU funding. Being part of a forum
would enable international co-operation and exchange of experience
between members.
Aims
To transfer geological knowledge and the value of earth heritage to
the public through educational and leisure activities. The Geopark
would provide a designated area of diverse and significant geology
which contains accessible sites.
The Geopark will provide a programme of ongoing events including:
Talks/lectures
Rock and Fossil Roadshows
Fieldtrips
Conservation days
Benefits
The majority of exposed geology within the Cotswold Hills geopark is
displayed in aggregate sites and quarries, both currently in use and
disused, these are excellent for displaying the geodiversity and will
be used to increase public knowledge in geology, uses and history of
aggregate extraction.
All project outputs will each provide at least one of the following
in order to mitigate the effects of aggregate extraction:
- enhance access
- improve the quality of life of local communities
- increase recreational and educational opportunities
- restore or enhance landscape value
- enhance biodiversity
- conserve and enhance geological features
Other benefits of the Geopark include:
- Heighten public awareness
- Increase educational activities in the area
- Provide safe accessible sites for public and school visits
Appendix 2
-
Promote value of local geological heritage
Provide understanding of areas key features
Spread of visitor load, aiding site sustainability
Preservation and conservation of significant sites
Promote sustainable collection of specimens
We aim to work closely with the county, district and parish councils
within the geopark and to create working partnerships with the local
community, private, public and voluntary organisations. We believe
this to be of key importance in developing and managing a successful
Geopark.
