Gastroenterology/Radiology Placement Description
Placement
FY1
The department
This job will be based on ward A7 which is a
general medicine and gastroenterology ward.
The F1 will be trained and supervised in the
management of inpatients with both acute and
chronic general medical conditions. This will
include training in the management of acute
medical emergencies. During this attachment
the F1 will gain experience in the assessment
and management of common GI conditions
including IBD, upper and lower GI haemorrhage,
GI cancer and chronic liver disease. This
experience will also involve the management of
the terminally ill patient.
A proportion of patients will be elderly with
multiple co-morbidities and complex social
needs which will give experience in the
importance of multidisciplinary team working in
the management of these patients.
The F1 will work alongside two other F1s, two
SHOs and two registrars and will be supervised
by two consultant physicians and
gastroenterologists on ward A7.
Specific to this position is also experience in the
assessment and management of
gastroenterology patients undergoing
radiological investigations and interventions
including ERCP, EUS, liver biopsy, enteric stent
insertion and enteral feeding tube insertion.
This position will provide an insight into the role
that these investigations and interventions play
in the management of complex medical and
gastroenterology patients. Education in this will
be provided by Professor Martin.
Medical students will also be based on ward A7
and the F1 will help in the supervision and
education of medical students.
As well as the trusts educational programme set
out for the foundation trainees the F1 in A7 will
attend a Tuesday morning gastroenterology
breakfast educational meeting and a
Gastroenterology radiology MDT which occurs
weekly on Thursdays.
The F1 will be encouraged to attend OP clinics
and to attend OP clinics for observation.
Regular feedback is given in the form of ward
