“MAKING IT IN VERMONT”
Art Workshops Across the Manchester Region
February 16-22, 2009
The Making it in Vermont arts initiative is designed to bring visitors to the area in touch
with our local arts community that is diverse in its offerings from creative theater to
custom furniture design. This February local artists will open up their studios to share
their creative insights with visitors to the region who are interested in getting to know our
arts community more intimately.
WRITING PRESS RELEASES THAT GET INTERVIEWS
Have you ever wondered how artist get articles written about them in newspapers and
magazines? Do your press releases rarely make it into print? Would you like to learn
some tips on “creating sparks” with your press releases? Have you ever written a press
release?
In this workshop, you will learn the art of writing creative press releases hat will
maximize your publicity potential. You’ll learn the importance of creating a “story”, how
to arrange the content of your release, and you;ll receive helpful tips on organizing a
publicity campaign.
We’ll do some writing exercises, and feedback will be provided for those of you who
choose to bring in some of your past press releases.

READER’S THEATER OF A PLAY
Enjoy a staged reading of Sherry Kramer’s new play about Global Warming entitled
“When Something Wonderful Ends”. This one character play has been written by a long
time Dorset Colony writer and teacher at Bennington College. Jenny Rohn, of
Bennington, will perform the staged reading.

PAINTING THE WINTER LANDSCAPE IN WATERCOLOR
The winter landscape is usually considered colorless and dreary. In fact, the winter scene
is often light and colorful. The winter sky can be especially colorful while the snow cover
reflects both light and cold from the surroundings. In this full day workshop, we will
have fun while completing a colorful winter landscape. We’ll learn basic watercolor
techniques and especially work on creating clear, colorful skies, bare winter trees and soft
texture of snow.

INTRODUCTION TO CLOGGING
A brief history on the origin and establishment of American Clog Dancing followed by a
backstory on how clogging came to be in the Shires of Vermont. A personal biography
of the instructor and the group he is associated with. Some "fun time" is scheduled with
the instructor showing some popular dances done at events all over America. Followed
by the actual teaching of basic beginner clogging steps and possibly if class advances
well...an actual routine as well.

PICTURE WEAVING FOR CHILDREN
Children learn the basics of weaving on a lap loom. Using weaving to create a picture
that tells a story young people can hone their math skills, boost their self-esteem and have
fun all at the same time. Students will be able to take their loom home with them to work
on future projects. This workshop is for children ages 7-12. Limit 6 students.

George Bouret-I began my Photography education attending classes at New England
School of Photography in 1981. Worked at the advertising studio of Leonard Silver Mfg.
Co. from 1982 to 1985. Graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
in 1991.I have supported myself as a Photographer specializing in Portrait, Architectural

Tony Conner-Tony is a widely exhibited, award winning watercolorist. Tony’s energetic
approach to teaching and enthusiasm for the watercolor medium are combined to create

Elizabeth Cooper-Elizabeth Cooper is a naturalist-educator with a long time
love of book arts and affinity for books and paper. Her experience in book arts
has come from attending numerous book arts workshops including study at
Penland School in North Carolina with Bonnie Stahlecker, and studio
workshops with book binder-artists Daniel Kelm, Hedi Kyle, Linda Lembke,

Serena Kovalosky-Serena spent 18 years working in the corporate world. She stepped
away from this career path to achieve her personal dream of establishing a business as a
professional visual artist. She works in a non-traditional medium (organic sculpture) and
uses creative marketing techniques to promote her artwork. She has facilitated comentoring groups for artists and writers in Montreal and upstate New York. She is also

Judy Lake-Judy Lake has been creating uniquely designed lampshades for years. She
has been a frequent exhibitor at local craft shows. Her store, Lake’s Lampshades is
situated in the heart of the village of Pawlet, Vt. She has just completed her first book,
“The Lampshade Lady’s Guide to Light up Your Life” soon to be released. To learn

Alexandra Langstaff- Alexandra Langstaff, owner and director of Hullabaloo
Danceshop, has worked with children and adults for over thirty years encouraging
personal growth while exploring physical language and movement. Her background in
early childhood and elementary education as well as modern dance, combined with
twenty years in the ski industry, has resulted in an innovative dance program for students
of all ages and abilities.
John Morton- was first exposed to clogging at age three and has been a clogger since
age ten. John has won numerous championships in both solo, duo/duet, and group
competition categories. He also teaches at conventions/workshops throughout New
England and performed at famed events, such as the Eastern States Exposition and the
Great New York State Fair. John is also personally mentored by international clogging
instructor, James Naylor of Quebec, Canada.

Erika Schmidt-Erika Schmidt, MFA is a visual and performing artist, new to southern
Vermont. She works in various innovative printmaking techniques at Green Hill Studio
in Pawlet . Her work is is shown and collected nationally. She is the recipient of
numerous awards and commissions for her unique approach to the integration of art

Beth Anne Meachem-Beth Anne Meachem is the Executive Director of the Greater
Manchester Arts Council. She established the Baber Community Art Center in Jamaica,
Vt that ran for several years serving to bring local artists together with residents and
visitors to the region. She is an experienced weaver and arts educator. She spent a
number of years in CT. working on creative extensions within the classroom in the Essex
school system.
