Tips
Any job hunting will prove pretty fruitless unless you have already done some work on understanding
your own needs and identifying your skills. If you are not yet at this stage try the Career skills website:
www.shef.a.cuk.uk/careers/cms/. Once you have identified your needs and skills you should try and
match them against particular jobs. Make use of Prospects Planner to investigate jobs that are
appropriate to you: www.prospects.ac.uk/ - select ‘What job would suit me?’
The Careers Service website has a wealth of information on job hunting. Start by looking at
www.shef.ac.uk/careers/students/gettingajob. Make sure you read carefully the Downloads on finding
out about jobs, job hunting and meeting employers.
Published vacancies
Extensive databases of information on graduate employers can be found on Prospects:
prospects.ac.uk/, Doctorjob: www.doctorjob.com and Hobsons: www.hobsons.com. The Careers
Service also has copies of the printed directories associated with these websites.
The Careers Service itself offers finalists and recent graduates its own Vacancy Service plus links to
other vacancy databases and national and international recruitment websites, go to:
www.shef.ac.uk/careers/vacancies.html
Local, national and regional newspapers and specialist periodicals can also be useful as sources of
vacancy information, and you will find copies of SOME these in the Careers Service. Publications
advertising jobs for Civil Engineers include; The Engineer, New Civil Engineer, Water Bulletin and
New Scientist.
If you are particularly interested in opportunities with small and medium-sized companies in Yorkshire,
you should look at the GraduateLink web site: www.gradlink.com
