Program Description:
This interactive workshop will review what we know about the risk factors and warning signs of youth suicide and
the connection with mental health awareness and treatment. We will examine the research on contagion and
the national media recommendations for the reporting of suicide. We will also explore the areas of the Web 2.0
that may be hidden to adults but that are easily accessed by youth on a daily basis. These unsupervised areas
may include image boards, blogs, and social media sites dedicated to the promotion of gossip, bullying, selfharm, eating disorders and suicide. Suicide prevention efforts and strategies to combat at-risk youth behaviors,
including those involving social media, will be highlighted and discussed.
Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to:
 Identify the risk factors and warnings signs often associated with youth suicide and other at-risk
behaviors especially those related to behavioral and mental health issues.
 Explain the association between media coverage of suicide and contagion among teens and outline the
national media recommendations on the reporting of suicide.
 Identify areas of the Web 2.0 that youth visit which may foster suicidal and other at-risk behavior.
 Describe suicide prevention efforts and other strategies to combat at-risk youth behaviors which utilize
social media and other resources at a local, state and national level.
Target Audience:
This is an introductory program for educators, school counselors, social workers, nurses, probation officers,
members of Student Assistance Programs, therapists and other helping professionals interested in identifying,
preventing and responding to youth suicide and other at-risk behaviors while exploring the role of the media,
