Reply to Memo from the OSCAR group of LISA on Formats for interchanging terminological data

Dear Mr Anobile,

Following our e-mail of 2000-07-06 your memo has been discussed at our last meeting in London on 17 August 2000. Please find the answer of ISO/TC 37/SC 3 below:

We welcome your interest in the work of TC 37/SC 3 and would like to respond to your memo of 2000-03-10.

We agree that the primary markets for the current ISO/TC 37/SC 3 projects are language technology developers and terminology database developers.

As general policy ISO/TC 37/SC 3 has agreed to base its standards on XML and its accompanying W3C standards instead of general SGML (ISO 8879) wherever applicable.

We recognize the need for interoperability and have set in place the development of a high-level Terminology Markup Framework that will enable interoperability between terminology formats provided that they are compliant with the Framework and that they use the same set of data categories and constraints. Geneter and MSC will both be used as input to the design of this general framework. XML technologies have enabled us to introduce an aggressive time scale for ISO project 16642 to achieve these goals.
