LECTURES:
4 November 2003
- "HOW DOES IT WORK? - SIMPLE BUT INTERESTING EXPERIMENTS IN OPTICS" - lecture with
demonstrations given by our faculty advisor Prof. A. Kowalczyk
2 December 2003
- "SINGLE PHOTON INTERFERENCE? -THE AMAZING WORLD OF QUANTUM OPTICS" - lecture
with discussion given by Anna Szwagierek. We invited for this lecture scientists from our
Department, who are working among other things on quantum mechanics.
29 April 2004
WHITE LIGHT” – invited lecture given by
Dr. B.Zietek, after the lecture we visited the National Laboratory for Atomic Molecular and
Optical Physics
- “NONLINEAR EFFECTS IN OPTICS, GENERATION OF
EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS:
20 Apil 2004
We organized a VISIT OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM BYDGOSZCZ CITY IN LABORATIORIES
OF MEDICAL PHYSICS GROUP AT OUR DEPARTMENT:
- we prepared a lecture “PHYSICS IN MEDICINE, DIAGNOSTICS BY MEANS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC
WAVES” (the presentation will be avilable soon on our web page)
- we prepared demonstrations in optical laboratories:
 He-Ne Laser – recently we received from the menager of General Physics Laboratory
at our Department a laser which allows to show how lasers operate, what are the
properties of laser radiation and how do they change when one changes the
properties of laser cavity
 Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography – we demonstrated how OCT device works
and how it helps in examination of the eye
 Holography – we explained to the students how one can make a hologram and we
showed holograms made in our laboratory
 Pulfrich’s effect
 Visit in the General Physics Laboratory
22 – 25 April 2004
THE FOURTH FESTIVAL OF ART AND SCIENCE IN TORUN
-We helped in organization of workshops “The Art of Vision”:
we prepared a poster “The eye – our own optical ‘device’ “ describing how the eye works,
the errors in visual focusing, colour blindness etc; together with the poster we prepared
demonstrations: Pulfrich’s effect, Ishihara test for color blindness, how to check that
everyone has an optics disk; we also prepared bookmarks containing information on
errors in visual focusing, anatomy of the eye and some optical illusions.
- During the workshops “The Art of Flying” we supervized young people playing a flight
simulator.
-We helped during the projections of educational movies.
-We prepared a poster containing information about our Chapter (our goals, interests,
activites, history etc.)
15 June 2004
We organized a VISIT OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM TOWN SZAMOTULY IN OUR
DEPARTMENT.
We presented a lecture: “PHYSICS IN MEDICINE, DIAGNOSTICS BY MEANS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC
WAVES” and prepared demonstrations using the SPIE educational optical kit and other
instruments available in our laboratories (educational He-Ne Laser, Michelson’s
interferometer, OCT device etc.)
TRANSIT OF VENUS
8 June 2004
Using a telescope we were observing the tranist of Venus. Our observations attracted many
students and professors who gatered at the backyard of our Department where we placed
the telescope.
CONTACTS WITH OTHER STUDENT CHAPTERS SPIE
12 March 2004
Our Vice President, Tomasz Bajraszewski visited Technical University in Wroclaw and the
Student Chapter SPIE in Wroclaw where he gave a lecture: “SPECTRAL OPTICAL COHERENCE
TOMOGRAPHY”
28 April 2004
A member of Student Chapter SPIE in Wroclaw, Ewa Chmielewska visited in Torun and gave
us a lecture: “PROPERTIES OF IN-FIBRE BRAGG GRATTINGS IN POLARIZATION MAINTAINING
FIBERS”
"MEETINGS IN THE OPTICS LABORATORY"
Since October we started a new spontaneous action. During their work in the laboratory
couple of students took up discussions on different problems in optics. These meetings (held
in less formal atmosphere) gave an opportunity to deepen our knowledge in optics. As they
took place in the laboratory we could also make experiments showing fundamental problems
in optics like optical realization of Fourier transform and optical filtering, Young experiment
and others. One of consequences of "Meetings in the laboratory" was the lecture "Single
photon interference". We are planning to develop this action and involve more students in it.
OPTICS LIBRARY
Thanks to SPIE which donated books to us we have established our optics library.

Future Chapter activities:
We are planning to:
- prepare demonstrations for students:
recently we received an optical kit from SPIE and next academic year we are going to
use it for optics demonstrations for studnets, we also would like to prepare more
advanced demonstrations for high school students
- participate in The Fifth Festival of Science and Art in Torun (April 2005)
we are planning to prepare a lecture with demonstrations devoted to development and
applications of lasers
- organize a trip to the laboratories of Warsaw Uniwersity of Technology
- update our web page
- continue to give different lectures in optics during our meetings,
