IPC Revision Project D003, subclass C08J March 20th, 2002

Rapporteur Report

Comments on the proposed definition of Annex 10 of project D003 were received from JP,

EP, US, RU and DE.

Title

The title of the subclass is very general. To understand the title it is necessary to read it together with the title of the class. It is our opinion that a subclass title should be formulated so that a person could understand what the subclass covers, without having to read the class title.

R. does not suggest a new formulation of the title at this point, but it should be discussed at the Definition Task Forces meeting how to deal with this kind of situation.

Definition Statement

EP and US suggested removing the phrase “under the subclass definition” from paragraph 2

B. R. agrees with this and will remove it.

Relationships between large subject areas

JP and RU have suggested different formulations to make paragraph C. clearer. R. agrees that a better definition of C08G 18/00 could be useful. R has adopted the formulation suggested by

RU, since it is simpler than the solution suggested by JP.

JP has noticed that B29 is mentioned both under this section and under section 5 and wants to remove one of the references. R. agrees to this and will remove the reference in section 5. US has suggested to add a new wording to B29 in section 5. This wording is now included in the reference under section 3.

Limiting References

US suggests that the phrase “This subclass does not cover” should be removed, since the phrase is unnecessary. It is our opinion that this phrase should remain, since section 2 starts with the phrase “This subclass covers”. It is more consistent if both phrases remain. This should however be discussed at the task force meeting.

Informative References

DE and RU want to include C10G to this section. R. will include C10G as an informative reference.

US has also suggested a modification of the wording of C10C. R. has included the suggested modification in the new proposal.

EP supports the layout proposed by UK in annex 9. R. thinks also that the proposed layout is more user-friendly and has changed the proposal accordingly.

CLASSIFICATION DEFINITIONS FOR SUBCLASS C08J

Subclass C08J

WORKING-UP; GENERAL PROCESSES OF COMPOUNDING; AFTER-

TREATMENT NOT COVERED BY SUBCLASSES C08B, C08C, C08F,

C08G OR C08H

2.

Definition statement

This subclass covers:

A.

Chemical aspects of processes for treating, compounding, working-up or recovery of macromolecular substances unless the treatment, compounding, working-up or recovery is provided for elsewhere as specified below.

B.

Chemical features of manufacture, treatment or coating of articles or shaped materials containing macromolecular substances unless the manufacture, treatment or coating is provided for elsewhere as specified below.

C.

Chemical aspects of working-up of macromolecular substances to porous or cellular articles or materials and after-treatment thereof unless provided for elsewhere as indicated below.

D.

Chemical aspects of recovery or working-up of waste materials, i.e. macromolecular materials (e.g. polymers), solvents and unreacted monomers, unless provided for elsewhere as indicated below.

3.

Relationships between large

C08J is residual in relation to subclasses C08B, C08C, C08F, C08G and C08H, which cover: subject matter areas

A.

Processes specially adapted for treating macromolecular substances with specified constitution.

B.

Polymerisation processes involving purification or recycling of waste polymers or depolymerisation products of specified macromolecular substances

C.

Preparatory processes of porous cellular materials, in which monomers or catalysts with specified constitution are used, e.g. foamed polymeric products of isocyanates or isothiocyanates characterised by the monomers or catalysts used in C08G18/00.

B29 covers mechanical aspects for working up, after-treatment and compounding of plastics or materials in a plastic state.

4.

Limiting references

This subclass does not cover:

A.

Manufacture of semi-permeable membranes for separation processes or apparatus, which is covered by B01D67/00 to 71/00

B.

Making microcapsules or microballoons, which is covered by B01J13/02 to

13/22

C.

Depolymerisation of the molecular chains of a polymer to the original monomer is considered as a manufacture method of the original monomer, which is covered by C07

D.

Coating articles of macromolecular substances with metallic materials, which

Special rules of classification

(1) In this subclass, in the absence of an indication to the contrary, classification is made in the last appropriate place.

(2) In this subclass, it is desirable to add the indexing codes of subclass C08L.

The indexing codes should be unlinked.
