Job Specification
1.
Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to organisation goals
(Its expected outcome and how it is achieved)
The MeS1 is accountable to the Manager of the Automated Laboratory for the performance of routine diagnostic
tests in a multi-disciplinary laboratory. The incumbent may be required to work across directorates depending on
site specific requirements.

Reporting/Working Relationship
(To whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is responsible for and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation)

The incumbent reports to the Manager of the Automated Laboratory through Supervising Scientists.
The incumbent will work in a team of Technical, Scientific, Operational Services and Clerical staff.
Special Conditions
(such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent overtime etc)

Will be rostered over 24 hours / 7 days per week including public holidays and may be required to
participate in an on-call roster.
Some interstate and intrastate travel may be required
Required to handle and process potentially infectious samples.
May be required to rotate through a range of laboratory sub-specialty work sites.

Depending on work requirements the appointee may be transferred to other locations within SA
Pathology to perform work of a similar nature appropriate to the classification either on a permanent
or temporary basis.

Appointment is subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Report obtained through the Screening and
Licensing Branch, Dept Families & Communities, to be renewed every three years thereafter from
date of issue

Statement of Key Outcomes and Associated Activities
(Group into major areas of responsibility/activity and list in descending order of importance)
1.
Contribute to the provision of a reliable and efficient diagnostic service by:
Participation in the performance of routine tests. This may include tests across Automated,
Microbiology and Transfusion laboratories, depending on site specific requirements.
Reviewing internal and external quality control programs with the implementation of
appropriate corrective action.
Involvement in development and evaluation of new methods and equipment.
Participating in after hours services in all laboratory disciplines.
Providing appropriate interpretative comments for test results when required.
May be required to undertake collection of specimens from patients, including venepuncture
and paediatric collections.
Performance of equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures.
Contributing to general housekeeping within the laboratory.
2.
Provide assistance to the Laboratory Manager by:
Coordinating designated tasks
Assisting in the implementation of SA Pathology Equal Opportunity and Occupational Health
and Safety Policies.
Assisting in preparation for NATA, ISO9000 and any other accreditation requirements
determined by SA Pathology.
Participation in hospital accreditation processes.
Participating in community based health programs and educational activities where
appropriate.
Promoting community awareness of the SA Pathology laboratory service.
3.
Contribute professional and scientific expertise to the laboratory by:
Maintaining skills.
Participating in professional development activities and remaining informed about current
developments in haematology, transfusion, serology and clinical chemistry.
Assisting in test and equipment evaluation and implementation.

Contribute to Occupational Health and Safety within SA Pathology by taking reasonable care to
protect personal health and safety of other staff, wear protective clothing and use safety equipment as
directed.
Provide services for the South Australian community consistent with the policies of the elected
Government by complying with the Code of Ethics for South Australian Public Sector Employees, SA
Pathology Code of Ethics and with all other policies contained in SA Pathology Corporate Manual.
Comply with the Principles of the Code of Fair Information Practice, adopted by the Department of
Health, which regulate the collection, use, disclosure storage and transfer of all personal patient/client
information within the organisation and throughout its funded service providers.

Experience in the performance of routine & complex diagnostic pathology tests in one or more of
the following disciplines; Clinical Chemistry, Immunoassay, Haematology and Transfusion.
Experience in the performance and monitoring of Quality Control.
Knowledge

Knowledge of at least one of the following areas of diagnostic pathology; Clinical Chemistry,
Immunoassay, Haematology and Transfusion.
Knowledge of computer applications in diagnostic pathology.
Knowledge of EEO and OH&S principles.
Knowledge of NATA accreditation and ISO 9000 certification requirements
