2014-2015 Excellence in Rural Education! Campus Leadership Team Alan Umholtz, Superintendent Jason Hybner, Junior High Principal Campus Faculty and Staff Members Tina Boehm, CATS/PTO President, parent Charlen Speed, CATS/PTO Vice President, parent Yorktown ISD Goals All students at Yorktown ISD will reach their full academic and social potential and will be responsible citizens in a global society. All parents, community members, and educators at Yorktown ISD will be active partners in the education of our students. Yorktown ISD will have a safe, orderly environment that promotes successful learning. Mission Statement The staff of Yorktown Independent School District believes that all students can learn and achieve mastery of skills to ensure success in a changing world. We believe that our school's purpose is to instill a life-long commitment to learning while fostering social and emotional growth and good behavior and attitudes. Realizing that education is a shared responsibility, we accept the challenge to teach all students so they can achieve their full potential. Vision In partnership with parents and the community, YJHS will provide a rigorous and relevant educational experience that is high quality, challenging, and inspires all students to become their best, most authentic selves. Yorktown Junior High is a Title I, Part A School-wide Campus Comprehensive Needs Assessment Demographics Summary In determining needs assessment for the demographics summary the following data was used: Special populations data and percentages (GT, dyslexia, ESL, At-risk, socioeconomic status, special education, ethnicity reports), and STAAR data. Enrollment for the current school year is down, but this due to a large 8th grade class leaving the campus and a small incoming 6th grade class for the 2014-2015 school year. The current enrollment in grades 6-8 is 115, a difference of almost 30 students from the prior year. The current year has 64% of students low SES. The school demographics have also been changing over the past five years, mirroring the state change in demographics. Currently, the campus is about 55% Hispanic, and 45% white. The current at-risk population is 51% of students. RTI processes have been put into place at the junior high to help struggling students, rather than just recommending them for special education. Demographics Strengths * RTI is being done more effectively than in the past as evidenced by the decreasing number of special education referral and increasing number of students engaged in the RTI process. * Across the campus the student to teacher ratios are generally lower than the state average. Demographics Needs * Our economically disadvantaged student numbers are increasing each year. Teachers need more strategies to work with these students. * The Hispanic population is increasing and teachers need strategies to work with these diverse learners. * At-risk population is increasing and teachers need to have strategies to increase these students engagement in school. * Special education students need help to meet state standards. * Focus on accommodations in the classroom to make inclusion more successful. Yorktown Junior High used a committee of teachers and parents to examine the student achievement on the campus. The committee used and analyzed the following data: Student Achievement Strengths * Campus met standards and earned ELA distinction. * Met all areas of state accountability * Campus distinction in academic achievement in Reading/ELA Student Achievement Needs * Teachers need to keep up with TEKS changes in subject areas. * Increased STAAR resources geared toward increasing rigor in instruction. * Continue growth in student achievement and have students exceed progress measures. * Continue to strive for students reaching the Level III standards. * Work on increasing the number of students achieving Level II standards. * Increasing attendance at STAAR tutorials. * Monitor student progress and create early intervention in academics, behavior, and attendance. * Students are meeting state standards in assessments, but the level of exceeding progress is low. * Low number of students meeting the Level III Advanced status on STAAR. * There is a drastic 30-40 percentage point achievement difference between Hispanic students and White students. The Hispanic students consistently score much lower across the grade levels and subjects tested. * Not achieving 79% passing rates for some subjects and all subpopulations is the reason YJHS did not meet system safeguards (federal) passing standards. School Culture and Climate Strengths * Learner-centered environment * 100% Highly qualified staff * Student involvement in extracurricular activities * Focus on increased parent - teacher conferences * Technology – 2nd full computer lab, Smart Boards in most classrooms School Culture and Climate Needs * Continue to increase staff morale * Continue to reward positive behavior and try to work on additional rewards * Continue to provide Fundamental 5 training * Continue to increase staff morale by recognizing and celebrating strengths and successes. Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Summary * Implemented the TEKS Resource System * Fundamental 5 has been implemented * Increased instructional walkthroughs * Increased use of DMAC for data disaggregation Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Strengths * Common curriculum, scope, sequence, with TEKS Resource System * LEAD4WRD Training relating to new testing and data analysis of curriculum/test * RTI classes and Activity Period have helped with failure rates and STAAR preparation Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Needs * Continue training teachers on how to use the TEKS Resource System * More STAAR-aligned instructional supplements * Walkthroughs have shown the need for teachers to increase informal assessments as well as critical writing opportunities Family and Community Involvement The data utilized for the comprehensive needs assessment and family and community involvement were as follows: parent activity sign in sheets and surveys, PTO participation, parent attendance at functions. The parental involvement factor continues to be a struggle on the campus. Many activities and parental involvement opportunities are offered, but attendance at these functions remain low. For example, we offered a Grandparents/Parents breakfast for all students and the attendance was dismal: only 6 students’ Grandparents/Parents came. Some of the successful programs have been student registration in August 2014 that required all students to register for the new school year. Over 90% of all parents came during this two-day window. Notices for all PTO involvement and meetings are sent home with students and also consistently posted on the school’s website. Parents are encouraged to participate in all activities. The campus will continue to focus on involving parents throughout the year. Family and Community Involvement Strengths * Multiple highly engaging parent and student activities are offered * Increased parent contacts by teachers * The new website is more modern and much easier for parents to stay up-to-date Family and Community Involvement Needs * Offer highly engaging parent and student activities * Increased parental involvement in all activities * Continue to offer parental activities that involve students * Increase parental participation in PTO * Increase community and parent volunteer program * Increase community members’ presentations to students * Increase the number of times parents volunteer throughout the school year Goal 1: Yorktown Junior High will be a high performing campus that results from quality and effective instruction, coupled with high expectation for all staff and students.
