Synopsis on Clinical activities in Nephrology/ Dialysis/ Transplantation

Department of Renal Medicine and Transplantation at the Barts Health NHS
Trust is one of the largest renal unit in the UK. It provides comprehensive
renal failure treatment to over 2.5 million ethnically diverse population in
the east London, UK. It is affiliated with Barts and the London School of
Medicine and Dentistry. It provides following services:
Over 500 AKI patients are admitted annually for assessment and treatment.
Over 120 renal transplants are performed a year. Over 800 renal transplant
recipients are regularly followed up in the outpatient department.
Over 800 HD patients receive dialysis either in hospital or affiliated satellite units.
Over 200 CAPD/APD patients are receiving treatment as part of our expanding
home based dialysis therapy unit.
Over 500 patients annually are seen in the designated pre dialysis clinics.
Specialist one stop clinics such as diabetic kidney disease, Renal/HIV, Renal/Liver,
Renal/Myeloma, Renal/Cardiology and palliative care clinic are part of routine
clinical services.
Clinical trials team headed by Academic Director (Professor M. Yaqoob) is actively
involved in many international, national and local trials.
In house social support and councelling service is provided from within the
department.
Comprehensive Renal histology and immunology service is provided.
Comprehensive interventional radiology/nephrology service is provided.
Clinical activities available for the Fellow.
Renal Unit is Staffed by 10 Consultant Nephrologist, 4 Transplant and Access
surgeons, 2 renal histopathologist, 2 immunologist/ tissue typing consultants, 8
specialist registrars in renal medicine and 4 in transplant surgery, 8 junior level
doctors and several consultant specialist nurses.
Specialist registrars and fellow get comprehensive training in all aspects of renal
care through very active educational and academic programme such as
Academic half days, weekly and adhoc renal histology reviews, weekly
interventional radiology meetings, journal clubs, formal lecture based teaching,
hospital grand rounds and more importantly supervised hands on training in the in
patients wards (64 designated beds, 10 day care bed and 4 acute assessment unit)
and 5 days a week outpatient suit. In the junior doctors survey quality of training in
our unit consistently scored very highly.
Overseas fellow are attached to Academic Director who devises a training
programme as per candidate’s needs and are regularly appraised formally to
ascertain their progress. Visiting fellows sponsored by ISN, ERA-EDTA and local
institutes form Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Croatia, Lithuania, Ethopia and
Brazil have benefitted.
