Eastern & Energy Massage Techniques (Course Number: MOD 103) 1. Course Description: This massage course includes an experimental introduction to the following modalities: Asian massage modalities, Polarity Therapy, Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Lymph/Cardio Circulation. Each student will have opportunities to practice and receive each of these modalities. 2. Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: A. Describe basic energetic theory from an Eastern framework including Meridians and Acupoints. B. Describe basic energetic theory from a Western framework including Poles and Zones. C. Demonstrate the ability to use essential oils safely within a massage practice. D. Demonstrate appropriate application of Circulation massage, including knowledge of indications and contraindications. Teaching Strategies for achieving Course Objectives: Power point presentations Demonstrate massage skills Demonstrate appropriate boundaries, intake and assessment skills Supervising in-class massages 3. Prerequisites: None 4. Course Hours: Defined as no less than fifty (50) minutes of any one clock hour during which the student participates in a learning activity in the physical presence and under the tutelage of an instructor. This course will meet once per week, from May 17, 2011 – June 21, 2011. All 6 class sessions will meet for 6 hours. Completion of on-line materials will not substitute for classroom time, but will be available for students to review material presented in class. Any classes that are missed due to teacher illness, school closure due to inclement weather, holidays, etc, will be rescheduled to a time convenient for the majority of students in the course. 8. Requirements for successful completion: Students are required to achieve a 90% attendance rate. Students are required to participate in quizzes and exams and achieve a 70% overall grade. Each student is required to maintain a practicum notebook documenting the results of 5 massage sessions that are completed outside of scheduled class hours. These notebooks will be reviewed weekly and provide a forum for discussing your experiences with clients prior to completion of the program. Grading: A. Attendance: 20% B. Participation: 20% C. Homework: 30% D. Written/verbal Knowledge: 30% 93 – 100%: A 82 – 92%: B 70 – 81%: C Less than 70% = Fail 9.
