Marine Safety Statement
An Application to carry out development on the Foreshore is required to complete the
following:
Carry out an assessment of marine traffic, if any, in the vicinity of the proposed development.
Identify the types of traffic (commercial shipping, fishing, leisure) and establish
shipping movements / routes through which this traffic transits. This information can
be sourced from The Irish Coast Guard, The Commissioners of Irish Lights, The Irish
Naval Service, local harbour authorities, Fishing co-ops and sailing clubs etc.
From this information determine the impact if any the proposed development may have on
marine traffic.
Where impact is likely, describe mitigating measures to be put in place to pr event
interaction. Where it is perceived that there will not be any impact, a clear statement
to this effect will be required and the grounds on which it is based.
When the aforementioned information is submitted along with the application the
Marine Safety Directorate will then be in a position to make an assessment. This
procedure should expedite all applications from a safety of navigation perspective.
The above will apply to all Offshore Electricity Generating Station applications in
addition to an E.I.S. (where required).
This Statement will now be mandatory with all Offshore Electricity Generating
Station Licence and Lease Applications due to the risk to safe navigation and/or longterm ecological damage.
