Chapter 1 Project
“Connect Four”
The object of the project: To connect four of the same one-digit number together using computational
and grouping symbols to achieve as many different integer answers as you can. These answers must range
from -99 to 99. You will use skills such as order of operations, grouping symbols, integer computation, and
others properties and mathematical symbols of which you may be familiar.
Rules of the project:
 You can only use the same one-digit chosen in every problem. You must use it exactly 4
times! Example: If your choose 2, 2 is the only number that could appear in any of your
problems. Choose your number wisely as some are much better than others!
 You may not duplicate an answer. One problem created per answer.
 You may use any of the four computational symbols (+, -, x, ÷) up to three times in a
problem. Symbols may repeat in a problem.
 Each digit must stand alone. (If you choose 2 as your digit, you cannot make it into 22, 222,
-22, -222, 2.2, 22.22, etc.)
 Grouping symbols such as parentheses, brackets, fraction bars, factorial (!), square roots √,
exponents, etc. may be used more than once in any problem. More than one grouping
symbol can occur in a problem, also.
Presentation/Organization of the project:
 You may work alone or with at most 2 other people. (Three to a group maximum.)
 A creative cover page with a title, your name(s) date, and hour.
 An organized list, on the template provided, stating your problem next to the answer on the
template.
Grading of the project:
The problem you create must mathc the answer you created it for. That means make sure parentheses are
included where needed!!!
Two points per correct problem!!!
Create 51-60 problems for an “A+” (up to 10 bonus problems allowed (one point per extra problem)).
Create 45-50 or more problems for an “A”
Create 40-45 problems for a “B”
Create 35-40 problems for a “C”
Create 30-34 problems for a “D”
Create 1-29 problems for an “F”
Ignore the project = 0
All problems should be checked using a calculator. Be careful that the calculator is doing what you ask of it.
Good Examples:
0 = [2 - (2 - 2)] - 2
[2 - 0] - 2
2-2
0
Choice of one-digit number: 2
3 = 2 + 2 - 2 ÷ (-2)
2 + 2 – (-1)
4 – (-1)
5
-4 = 2 - 2 - 2 x 2
2-2-4
0-4
-4
-1 = 2 ÷ (2 - 2 - 2)
2 ÷ (0 - 2)
2 ÷ -2
-1
2
Other Legal uses: 22 ; 2 ; 2 ; 2!; -2, other?
Illegal uses: 22; 222; .22; -22, 24 ,other?
2
You may not use the number 2 for your magic number!!! (Nor would you want to!!!)

# of problems correct ______
Your Points ______
Grade _____ = _____%
Total Points 50
If more than 50 problems are solved correctly with an appropriate problem shown, you can achieve 5 extra
points (one per extra problem) up to a maximum of 55.
This is your first grade in the project/test portion of your grade. This section of your grade counts 80% of
your overall grade. It is critical to do a superb job to finish first quarter well.
Late work has 20% deduction taken and no bonus points will be allowed.
Tentative Due Date: Monday, September 9th . It may be later, but will not be earlier than this date.
Answer Template
Record your created problem, using your “magic” one-digit number, next to each
answer. Answers 99-0 are on this side and -1 to -99 are on the other side.
