Short Course Programme
May 2006
in association with
THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL FOR NEUROLOGY AND NEUROSURGERY
The Institute will be offering the following short courses during the period 8-19 May 2006. These courses will be
of interest to senior and junior clinicians, as well as non-clinical scientists seeking information on new advances in
medicine. The courses will be presented by senior consultants and academic staff. The course fee of £175 a day
includes a sandwich lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments; £125 per day for attendance on five or more
days or as a group rate for five or more people attending from the same centre; £150 per day for clinical
trainees; £125 per day student rate. There will be a charge of £600 for the three day course on Statistical
Parametric Mapping (£475 for clinical trainees and £425 for students); lunch is not included on the third
day. (Written confirmation of clinical trainee and student status will be required)
The venue will be the Gilliatt Lecture Theatre on the ground floor of the Institute of Neurology (the Statistical
Parametric Mapping Course and the course on Multiple Sclerosis will be held in the Institute’s Wellcome
Department at 12 Queen Square.
Neuroimaging
Monday 8 May 2006
A one-day course on anatomy and neuro-imaging presented by the Lysholm Department of Neuroradiology. It
addresses (i) clinically useful techniques for imaging and identifying neural structure, and (ii) the present and
potential contributions of special imaging techniques such as magnetization transfer imaging, diffusion imaging
and diffusion tensor tractography.
This course should be of interest to practitioners and scientists devoted to
neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, radiology and the related basic sciences.
Organiser: Professor Tarek Yousry
Stroke
Tuesday 9 May 2006
A one-day course on modern approaches to the investigation, management and rehabilitation of stroke patients,
focusing on recent advances. Topics include approaches to thrombolysis, new stroke prevention regimes, modern
neuro-imaging techniques, and functional imaging studies of recovery after stroke.
Organisers: Professor Martin Brown, Dr Nick Ward
Dementia
Wednesday 10 May 2006
A one-day course covering clinical and scientific aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and non-Alzheimer dementias.
The various dementias are illustrated using clinical videos. The psychiatric and social aspects of dementia care
are also discussed, with an update on current and potential therapeutic strategies. The course is aimed at
psychiatrists, geriatricians and other health professionals involved in the diagnosis and care of patients with
dementia.
Organisers: Professor Martin Rossor, Professor Nick Fox, Dr Jonathan Rohrer
Statistical Parametric Mapping
Thursday 11, Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May 2006
This course presents instruction on the analysis and characterisation of functional activation data using Positron
Emission Tomography (PET), functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and, for the first time, Electroencephalography (EEG) and Magneto-encephalography (MEG). The course will be divided into three sessions,
dealing with (i) the theoretical foundations, (ii) procedural implementation and experimental design, and (iii) a
practical session in which SPM is used to analyse exemplar data sets from different modalities.
Organisers: Professor Karl Friston, Dr Will Penny
Epilepsy
Monday, 15 May 2006
A one-day course dealing with recent developments in the investigation and treatment of patients with epilepsy.
Topics include diagnosis of epilepsy, investigatory techniques, use of new antiepileptic drugs, status epilepticus
and surgical treatment for epilepsy.
Organisers: Professor Ley Sander, Dr Matthew Walker
Neuro-ophthalmology
Tuesday, 16 May 2006
A one-day course on visual disorders in relation to neurology suitable for neurologists and ophthalmologists. The
morning is devoted to common problems in neuro-ophthalmology covering disorders that most neurologists and
ophthalmologists will encounter. In the afternoon a symposium devoted to clinical features and management of
homonymous hemianopia will be presented. Illustrative case presentations are discussed by the experts.
Organiser: Dr Gordon Plant
Movement Disorders
Wednesday, 17 May 2006
A one-day course covering the latest research into, and treatment of, abnormal movements. Topics include
hyperkinetic movement disorders and diagnosis and treatment of akinetic-rigid syndromes. Video tapes are used
extensively and participants will be encouraged to bring VHS tapes of difficult or unusual patients for discussion.
The course concludes with the third Orion Lecture.
Organisers: Professor Andrew Lees, Professor Niall Quinn, Professor Kailash Bhatia
Multiple Sclerosis
Thursday, 18 May 2006
This one-day course provides a state of the art update on Multiple Sclerosis, including epidemiology, MRI in
clinical practice, MS mimics, disease modifying therapies, neuroprotection, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction and the
impact of the National Service Framework on the management of MS.
Organisers: Professor David Miller, Dr Gavin Giovannoni
Neuromuscular Disease
Friday, 19 May 2006
Neuromuscular disorders is one of the most rapidly advancing areas within clinical neurology. This one-day
course addresses recent developments across a wide spectrum of neuromuscular disorders and concentrates on
clinical manifestations, diagnostic testing and treatment. There is an emphasis on the major genetic developments
that have occurred and how these help clinicians. A wide range of topics including the major acquired and
genetic peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction and muscle disorders are covered.
Organisers: Dr Mary Reilly, Dr Mike Hanna
Application is being made to the Royal College of Physicians (UK) for CPD approval for these courses.
