Independently Published Book Garners National Recognition
in True Crime Category
DALLAS – May 29, 2009 – A first-time author with a compelling personal story and a desire to
help children, Darlene Ellison has landed a Gold 2009 National Independent Publisher Book
Award in the True Crime category for her recently published book, The Predator Next Door:
Detect, Protect and Recover from Betrayal.
Known as the IPPYs, the awards recognize outstanding books created by members of the
independent publishing industry. According to organizers “The IPPY Awards reward those who
exhibit the courage, innovation, and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing.”
Ellison will receive her first-place award May 29 in New York City at a gala during
BookExpo America, the publishing industry’s premiere annual trade event. More than 4,000
books were entered in the contest, which bestows awards to independently published books in
sixty-five categories.
Ellison led a charmed life as a mother, philanthropist, psychologist and businesswoman.
Then, in a single day, that life came crashing down when her ex-husband was arrested as a
pedophile in an FBI sting operation. Her riveting story is detailed in the book, where Ellison also
leads readers through her Betrayal Recovery journey of spiritual and emotional exercises and
activities. In addition, The Predator Next Door is a guide to detection and protection of predators
for concerned parents. It is also a book for anyone who has ever felt the shame, humiliation or
guilt that all betrayal brings its victims, whether that betrayal is infidelity, lies, theft and or
something else. Each chapter ends in specific, practical exercises that Ellison used during her
own journey of betrayal recovery.

“When I first created the concept for my book, traditional publishing companies seemed
interested,” Ellison said. “But they only wanted to focus on one aspect of the story – the true
crime portion, the self-help strategies or the methods for detecting predators. But I didn’t want to
separate these elements. Only by telling the complete story and providing readers with the
Journey Steps would I truly help those who have experienced betrayal.”
Rather than change her focus, Ellison launched her own publishing house, HTA Books,
and produced the book.
“I’m thrilled to bring home an IPPY Award, which proves we’ve created a high-quality
product and a book that can really help others,” Ellison said. “This re-energizes our efforts to
reach out and help those in the community working to overcome predators and the after-effects
of betrayal.”
