Classroom experiments and demonstrations for the classroom. Wrap-up with a tour of WCYB station in Bristol. (Field trip to Bristol) During this workshop, investigate cutting edge climate change science through ANDRILL education materials. (ANtarctic geological DRILLing; www.andrill.org) *Antarctica's Climate Secrets, *the Flexhibit (FLEXible exHIBIT) materials, include 5 themed posters, videos and a 200+ page activity book based on the 5 themes .Materials are designed for use by middle school students, but younger and older students have found these materials equally intriguing. Workshop I will focus on activities in units 1-3. Participants leave with hands-on, inquiry materials ready for immediate classroom use. Advanced Smart Board and Math Tools for Grades K-5 - Royce Jacomen Mathematics –Middle School (6-8) Dr. Betti Kreye=VT Mathematics- Secondary (9-12) Dr. Betti Kreye- VT This session focuses on utilizing Smart Board technology to improve student engagement in math. Educators will learn how to use advanced features for developing creative lessons, including the use of student clickers. This session will also feature the Smart Notebook Math Tools. 2009 SOL Changes and Using Models to Teach Fraction Concepts. 2009 SOL changes and Using Algeblocks to address the changes Hands on Engineering Jani Purtee Guiding Learning through Sound Reading Practices—Rhonda Phillips Chemistry – Alternative energy (solar and wind) projects, hot air balloons, sketching fundamentals and some hands-on with gears project. This session explores best reading practices that enhance content comprehension. From modeling the think-aloud to exploring B-D-A (before-, during-, and after-) reading strategies, and finally, reviewing the role of studying text to help students make connections and think more deeply, session participants will come away with a cache of easy-to-use ideas. SMART Board Savvy! - Tabitha Long Science for Elementary Teachers Royce Jacomen-VT K-5 This workshop will introduce you to and help you explore the many uses of your SMART Board and SMART Notebook 10 software. In this session, you will learn the basics of using SMART Notebook 10 as an engaging, interactive tool for your classroom. In addition to SMART Notebook, web 2.0 tools for use with your SMART Board will be shared that will help you enrich your daily lessons. Reading Vocabulary: Discovery Learning Across the Curriculum (k-5) Dr. Heidi Anne Mesmer - VT The focus of this session will be on developing vocabulary knowledge in reading, math, science, and social science. Vocabulary learning actually involves some of the same discovery and inquiry processes that are used in science. Learning words involves a) knowing how to use words in oral or written contexts; b) knowing when words are related to each other; and c) knowing what prior knowledge can support the words’ use. The session will provide five vocabulary strategies that can be used across the curriculum: Zooming "Kitchen Crystals" – Dr. Kristy Collins During this workshop we will explore crystal science and common crystals from the world around us...even from the kitchen! When you leave the workshop you will have materials to work with your students in the classroom. This workshop is for middle school teachers. in/zooming out, Stoplight Vocabulary, Word Roots & Connections, Flash Phrases, and Preview/Predict/Confirm. This session will focus on utilizing Smart Board technology to improve student engagement in science. Educators will learn how to use beginner to advanced features, Smart Board tricks, student clickers, video and sound additions, and interactive learning boards to increase student learning and engagement. "The compelling story of scientists and educators living and working in the harshest environment on earth serves as the hook to interest even the most reluctant science learners. Understanding the connection of the Polar Regions to the planet’s climate patterns is essential to understanding the climate changes that are happening on Earth. This workshop will continue the work begun in Workshop I by exploring units 4-5 of the *Antarctica's Climate Secrets* Flexhibit materials. Workshop I is not required to take Workshop II. This session will involve hands-on micro labs to motivate and prepare students for the SOL’s using Smart Board in the chemistry classroom. Technology – Royce Jacomen-VT Educators will explore the many possibilities for iPads, iPods, and other devices to improve student engagement in the classroom and at home. This session is all hands-on learning. Learn about the many features of handheld devices and how to transform any classroom activity from boring to engaging. Participants are encouraged to bring their own ipads. Inclusion – Building School-wide Four Square Writing – Inclusive Environments Rhonda Phillips – VT Learn about an easy-to-use writing method Lynn Jacomen This session will focus on the essential components of an inclusive environment and how to build a community of respect and value for all learners. Learn how to begin a journey of positive behavior support where teaching behavior, just as you would teach reading and math, is expected and reinforced. We will also explore the various types of co-teaching models and how you can move toward a more cohesive team of teachers. that helps students create logical, wellconstructed paragraphs and essays for all STEM content areas. Four Square Writing requires no fancy tools, yet its outcome is a wonderfully organized piece of writing.
