ANNOUNCEMENT
DAE-BRNS Biennial Symposium on Emerging Trends in Separation Science and Technology
(SESTEC-2012)
The fifth SESTEC symposium on “Emerging Trends in Separation Science and Technology (SESTEC2012)”, sponsored by the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) and organized by the
Association of Separation Scientists and Technologists (ASSET) will be held during February 27 March 01, 2012 at SVKM’s Mithibai College, Vile Parle, Mumbai. The objective of this four-day
Symposium is to provide a forum to scientists and engineers to discuss the recent advances in the area of
separation of metals such as actinides, lanthanides, Zr, Co, Mo, Cs, Sr and platinum group metals which are
of interest to the Department of Atomic Energy. In addition, speciation of actinides will be is included as
one of the scopes of the Symposium.
SESTEC-2012 will provide a platform to scientists and engineers to discuss emerging trends in the area of
separation science and technology which are likely to have an impact on the DAE’s programme related to
nuclear fuel cycle activities as well as production of isotopes. Scope of the symposium is as follows:
Scope
Two of the major consequences of neutron induced nuclear reactions with natural uranium targets,
nuclear fission and production of trans-uranium elements, have contributed significantly to the separation
chemistry of actinides. Since the early days of the Manhattan Project, much of the interest centered on the
separation of trace amounts of plutonium from large excess of uranium and moderate concentration of
fission/decay products. Solvent extraction and ion exchange have played a key role in isolation, separation,
and purification of uranium and plutonium both at analytical as well as at industrial scale. Sustained
interest in improved nuclear fuel-reprocessing methods and growing concern for the fate of actinides at
potential waste disposal sites provide continuous motivation for investigating the complexation and
separation behavior of actinides. Separation chemistry of actinides plays a pivotal role at different stages of
the nuclear fuel cycle: (a) recovery and purification from ores, (b) chemical quality control of nuclear fuels,
(c) fuel reprocessing, and (d) waste management.
The first use of solvent extraction based industrial process in DAE dates back to the late fifties and was
aimed at the purification of uranium required for the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle. With our policy of
three stages of nuclear power programme, many challenging areas have emerged especially for the back
end of the nuclear fuel cycle which involves spent fuel reprocessing and radioactive waste management.
The need for reprocessing of high burn up fuels and the growing need for environment protection have
made it essential to look for alternative solvents as well as alternative technologies. SESTEC-2012 will
provide a platform to scientists and engineers to discuss emerging trends in the area of separation science
and technology which are likely to have an impact on the DAE’s programme related to nuclear fuel cycle
activities as well as production of isotopes.
Scope of the meeting is as follows:

About Mumbai
Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the sixth
most populous city in the world. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour.
Mumbai is also the richest city in India, and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West or Central
Asia. Mumbai is the commercial and entertainment capital of India, it is also one of the world's top 10
centres of commerce in terms of global financial flow. The city also houses India's Hindi (Bollywood) and
Marathi film and television industry. Mumbai's business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a
higher standard of living, attract migrants from all over India and, in turn, make the city a potpourri of
many communities and cultures. Mumbai has a truly cosmopolitan population bustling with activity. It's
film industry "Bollywood" also draws a number of youths with tinsel dreams to Mumbai. Being a major
financial center, People from all over the world come here for business opportunities.
Most of the year, Mumbai's climate is warm and humid. Between November and February, the skies are
clear, and the temperature is cooler. From March the temperature becomes warm and humid till mid June,
the beginning of monsoon. During monsoon there are torrential rains, sometimes causing the flooding of
major roads and streets of Mumbai. The average rainfall which is brought by the south-west monsoon
winds in Mumbai is 180 cms. Monsoon ends by the end of September. October is comparatively hot and
humid.
