Lab Safety Game: Rules and Directions
Objective: TO be the first player to reach the receiving flask after successfully answering
questions and learning about lab safety.
Setting: The game board is a distillation apparatus. Distillation is a process used by
chemists to separate two substances from each other based on boiling points. One
substance is boiled to produce a vapor and then condensed. The condensed liquid is
collected in a separate receiving flask.
RULES:
1. Players will take turns starting with the player with the shortest last name and
continue clockwise.
2. 2. Each player chooses a game piece and places it in the boiling flask (frowning
faces) to start.
3. When it is a player’s turn he or she rolls the die and moves that number of spaces
along the game board. Follow the directions on the space where you land!
CARDS:
1. Goggles/Apron card = Goggles symbol on the board. These questions deal with
lab safety.
2. Tech Card = Hand with a test tube symbol on the board. These relate to
equipment or procedures.
3. Hazard card = Triangle with a “!” in it on the board. Penalties for unsafe practice.
4. Used cards should be placed on the bottom of the pile they were taken from.
5. If a card instructs a player to move his/her piece to a certain spot or number of
spaces in any direction they MUST be followed. If a player is instructed to lose a
turn, it means the NEXT turn, not end the current turn (You’re skipped the next
time around).
DIRECTIONS:
1. If you land on Goggles/Aprons Card of a Tech Card space: The person to your
right will draw a corresponding card for the player. If it is a question the reader
will announce the question. If the player answers correctly he/she is deemed
“SAFE” and is allowed to take a bonus turn by rolling the die again. A single
player can go a maximum of twice before his/her turn ends. If the card does not
have a question on it, but directions, the reader instructs the player what to do.
2. Hazard Card space: A reader to the player’s right draws a card and announces
what the card says. Then the card is given to the player. Everyone must listen
carefully so that proper directions are enforced.
3. Poison/Burn/Explosion/Fire space: The player must report directly to the First Aid
station on the board.
4. 4. To get out of First Aid:
a. The player must roll a 1, 3, or 5 in order to be permitted to leave. If he or
she rolls a 2, 4, or 6, he/she is still stuck until the next turn. If a 1, 3, or 5 is
rolled the layer moves the game piece onto the Clinic Pass space and waits
for his/her next turn to move.
b. If a player has a SAFETY CARD he/she may use the card to leave First
Aid Station on his/her next turn instead of using the die.
5. To win the first player must make it to the receiving flask on the game board.
Please continue to determine ranking.
CLEAN UP:
1. Gather all the cards of a given color and face them in the SAME DIRECTION.
Place a rubber band around the cards. Put the cards with the 6 game pieces and
the die into the plastic bag provided.
2. Return the game board and the plastic bag to the front of the room where you got
it from.
