ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Wheeler Technology Inc. Factory Demonstrator N540ED
This is factory demonstrator #3 or #4, we’re not sure. We do know that N540ED began life as N300EX
with a Continental IO-360 engine. In September 1992, the Continental IO-360 was removed, a Lycoming
IO-540, C4 B5, wide deck engine rated at 260hp was installed in its place, and the airplane was
rechristened N540ED. We have all of the airframe logbooks for both N300EX and N540ED. N540ED last
flew on August 10, 1998, before its engine and wings were removed for transportation and storage
purposes. At that time, its IO-540 engine had 533.8 hours since an April 1992, major overhaul. We have
logbooks for this engine beginning November 13, 1973, when it was remanufactured to zero time by the
AVCO Lycoming Factory Service Department in Williamsport, PA. N540ED has been in enclosed, dry
storage in Eastern Washington State since disassembly.
Additionally, this plane comes with installed speed brakes and a custom fabric cover which fits over the
outside of the cockpit and passenger area and covers all of the windows in order to prevent fading of the
interior from exposure to sunlight. We also have original, factory, artist sketches for proposed paint
schemes for N300EX and N540ED. N540ED has extemded range fuel tanks. Each wing has a main tank
which holds 27 gallons and an auxiliary tank which holds 19 gallons. Total fuel capacity is 92 gallons.
The plane has steel landing gear.
Wheeler Kit Plane
About 33% complete. This is Wheeler kit #48. It was composed of five separate kits which were
purchased from Wheeler Technology Inc. from late 1988 until about the middle of 1991. We have all five
kits plus a complete, factory, Series 90, conventional tail conversion kit and all of the parts for an elevator
push/pull system which replaces the cable control system the plane originally came with. We have all of
the original assembly manuals that came with each of the five, individual kits, and all records and receipts
of the build to date. We also have many, many extra Wheeler parts, and other airplane parts and
instruments that go with this offering. Email us for a list. This kit plane comes with steel landing gear.
The wings have been fitted with extended range fuel tanks. Total fuel capacity will be 92 gallons.
The engine for the kit plane is a Lycoming IO-540, C4 B5, wide deck, rated at 260hp. It was overhauled to
service specifications by Flying Colors Aviation, an Eastern Washington State FBO with an excellent
reputation. The overhaul was completed on April 14, 1994, at which time the engine was pickled for long
term storage. It has been in enclosed, dry storage in Eastern Washington State since pickling. We have all
log books and records of overhaul for this engine.
Propellers
We have a McCauley, Model C418, three blade, variable pitch propeller, which will accommodate either of
our Lycoming IO-540 engines. This one was installed in 1992, when it was brand new, on N540ED’s IO540 engine. It was removed after only 37.9 flight hours and has not flown since. We have engine log book
entries that verify this propeller has only 37.9 flight hours since new. It has been in enclosed, dry storage in
Eastern Washington State since 1997. We have the spinner, spinner screws, inner spacer and prop
controller for it. This propeller is rated experimental.
We also have a McCauley, Model C402, three blade, variable pitch propeller, which has an extended collar
to fit a Continental engine. This propeller was new when Wheeler Technology Inc. received it from
McCauley. Wheeler flew it for about 50 hours and never used it again. It has been in enclosed, dry storage
in Eastern Washington State since 1997. It looks to be in new condition to us, but we have no propeller log
book or engine log book entries to confirm the 50 hours of flight time on this propeller. It comes with a
prop controller. This propeller is rated experimental.
Both propellers are included with the factory demonstrator and kit plane above that we have for sale as a
package.
