RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
During my undergraduate degree I did more than 30 courses, including zoology, botany, biochemistry,
molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, animal physiology, plant physiology, animal physiology and
mathematics. My bachelor’s thesis was on “Types of Behaviors and Time Allocation of Captive Juvenile
Macaca Mulatta in Taihang Montains”, from which I learned some basic behaviour study methods.
My field work during post-graduation has been mainly conducted at Shengjin Lake National Nature Reserve,
Anhui Province, China, which holds up to 40,000 Bean Goose and 13,000 Greater White-fronted Goose
during the wintering period. I started research on goose behaviour during the 2008/2009 winter period when
I commenced my MSc. I led a team of three people studying the wintering ecology of Greater White-fronted
Goose and Bean Goose at Shengjin Lake from October 2009 – April 2010 and also assisted in developing a
systematic waterbird survey methodology for my master’s research. In the 2010/2011 winter my team
investigated competition between Greater White-fronted Geese and Bean Geese, and the habitat choice
and food selection of Bean Geese. I also conducted analysis of Greater White-fronted Goose and Bean
Goose faeces during 2008-2010 summers and took part in aquatic vegetation surveys in summers 2009 and
2010.
Some of the field data have been analysed and published (see below). Now I am processing the 2010/2011
winter data and plan to write papers about “Feeding Ecology of Bean Goose on Trapa”, and “Spatial,
Feeding Ecology and Diet overlap of Bean Goose and Greater White-fronted Goose” resulting from this
work.
In future studies, I plan to investigate why Bean Geese shift their foraging habitats with the wintering period
based on cost-benefit theory.
