Assistant Professor of Microbiology/Immunology
Department of Animal Science
1. Position Description
The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is
recruiting an Assistant Professor in Animal Biology specializing in microbiology and/or immunology.
This is an academic year (9 months) tenure track assistant professor position which includes the
expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach of relevance to
the California Agricultural Experiment Station. The successful candidate is expected to establish a
competitively funded research program focused on animal immunology and microbiology as related to
animal health, preharvest food safety or disease ecology of the production environment. An emphasis
on poultry is desired but programs related to any agriculturally-important species will be considered.
The candidate should have a strong background in basic and applied aspects of microbiology and/or
immunology and a strong interest in conducting fundamental research that will enhance California
agriculture by improving animal productivity, food safety and environmental quality.
The successful candidate is expected to have a record of excellence in scholarly research. The
appointee will be responsible for teaching an undergraduate course on concepts in immunology, with
a focus on those that are important to domestic animal health and disease prevention in a production
environment. Additional contributions to departmental courses and graduate education are expected.
Mentoring of graduate students, undergraduate student advising, participation in and development of
outreach programs, curricular development, and performance of departmental and university service
are expected.
2. Recommended FTE
This position is an academic year (9-month) tenure-track assistant professor position.
3. Availability of Space and Resources
The teaching, research, and outreach programs of the Department of Animal Science extend from
molecular to cellular to whole-organism to ecosystem and policy levels. Office and laboratory space
will be provided by the Department of Animal Science in Meyer Hall on the UC Davis central campus.
Animal Science faculty share administrative and accounting staff. In addition to laboratory and animal
resources on central campus, our faculty have access to UC Agriculture and Natural Resources
(ANR) research and extension centers that specialize in livestock production and natural resource
conservation and management (http://danrrec.ucdavis.edu/ ).

Numerous collaborative opportunities exist with other departments in the College of Agricultural and
Environmental Sciences, as well as with such units as the College of Biological Science, the School
of Veterinary Medicine, the School of Medicine and the California National Primate Research Center.
Start up funding will be provided based on the needs of the successful candidate.

The chair of the Search Committee is responsible for ensuring that the applicant pool is as diverse as

5. Affirmative Action Self-Analysis
Clearly one of the most important factors in achieving diversity in recruitment is the pool of available
candidates. We will follow the recruitment and selection process in conformity with college and
campus guidelines with respect to diversity. All members of the Search Committee share the
commitment to achieve as diverse a candidate pool as possible.
The Search Committee will employ strong efforts to reach under-represented groups using such
strategies as: contacting women's or ethnic minority caucuses of professional disciplinary
associations to assist in identifying candidates; advertising in text-based and on-line journals and
venues with a wide professional audience; and contacting persons associated with graduate
programs in related fields on this campus and elsewhere. The committee will also circulate the job
announcement on web-based listserves and bulletin boards that post employment opportunities.

Additionally, requests will be made to academic departments and professional societies to circulate
the job announcements on member listserves. Finally, the department chair has directed our entire
faculty to exploit their personal contacts in the scientific community to bring the position to the
attention of promising candidates.
Our current ladder rank professorial faculty consists of 29 Academic Senate members with the
following diversity distribution: African American (2), Asian Americans (2), Chicano/Latino/Hispanics
(3), Women (8), People of Color (6), non-Asian People of Color (3). The September 24, 2008
Academic Utilization Analysis - Workforce and Number Goals for the Department of Animal Science
includes the following diversity goals for Ladder Rank Faculty and Equivalent Titles: Asian-Americans
(1), Women (4). Additionally the department has 8 cooperative extension faculty and 2 academic
federation faculty for a total of 39 faculty.
6. Selection Criteria
Evidence for meeting these criteria includes but is not limited to: experience, candidate application
and statements, letters of recommendation, and interview (if invited).










Ph.D. or equivalent in Microbiology, Immunology or closely related field
Post doctoral experience preferred
Evidence of leadership and organizational skills relevant to the development of a successful
research, teaching and outreach program in the discipline of microbiology or immunology
Evidence of scholarship during graduate and post-graduate activities
Demonstrated ability or potential to obtain extramural support for research activities
Demonstrated ability or potential to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses
and to present information to scientific audiences
Willingness and interest to advise undergraduates
Demonstrated ability or potential and interest to mentor M.S. and Ph.D. graduate students
Evidence of communication skills and collegiality consistent with effective departmental,
campus and professional citizenship
Interest, understanding, and willingness to contribute to the missions of the California
Agricultural Experiment Station.
7. Selection Process
a)
The position will be advertised in the channels described below.
b)
The position will remain open until filled. However, to ensure consideration applications should

c)
Applications will be screened for completeness; candidates will be notified if their applications
are incomplete and given a reasonable amount of time to provide the missing materials.

The Search Committee will screen all applicants according to the qualifications specified in the
job announcements. The committee will identify and rank the candidates as "highly qualified,"
"qualified," and "unqualified," according to the criteria above. All committee members will be
consulted to ensure that the identification of unqualified candidates is consensual. Extramural
letters will be solicited from applicants judged qualified.
e)
Departmental Faculty and Specialists in Cooperative Extension will be consulted and informed
at monthly departmental meetings. Throughout the search, departmental members will have
access to all applications for review.
f)
The Search Committee will meet to determine the final slate of candidates recommended for
interview. A list of those recommended will be presented by the Search Committee Chair to all
Academic Senate and Federation members of the department for consideration, discussion
and approval.
g)
Following faculty approval, the Search Committee chair and the department chair will file an
Interim Recruitment Report to the CA&ES Dean’s Office. Following approval of the Interim
Recruitment Report, the Search Committee will invite the “top-ranked” applicants to visit the
Department of Animal Science at Davis for interviews including presentation of a seminar on a
subject appropriate to the recruitment (seminar will be video-taped and posted on a secure
website for faculty and administrator review for those who could not attend the seminar).
Those candidates who were not selected for interview will be so notified.
h)
The candidate seminars will be advertised campus-wide and to local animal industry groups.
In advance of the interviews, the Chair of the Search Committee will notify department and
recruitment committee members of the candidate's itinerary. Opportunities will be provided for
candidates to meet with the CA&ES Associate Dean, members of the Department of Animal
Science (including graduate students), Biotechnology Program and other interested campus
members, as well as colleagues or potential collaborators identified by the interviewee.
i)
The Search Committee will review and evaluate the interviewees immediately following the
last interview. The committee will recommend in priority-order the applicants interviewed.
Final recommendations will be communicated at a department faculty meeting by the Search
Committee chair for their consideration; voting will be according to approved procedures.
j)
The Final Recruitment Report will be prepared by the Search Committee Chair and the
department chair and forwarded to the CA&ES Dean's Office for review. If the person

recommended accepts the position, the selection process will conclude. If the position is
declined, the department will convene to determine if one of the other ranked candidates is to
be recommended or whether the search should be re-opened. Following conclusion of the
selection process, the remaining applicants will be notified in writing that the position has
either been filled or closed.

The research, teaching and outreach mission of the Department of Animal Science

concentrate on domesticated farm animals but include non-domesticated, wild, laboratory, and
companion animal species. Fields of study within the department include animal behavior, animal
systems modeling, animal welfare, aquaculture, comparative endocrinology, conservation biology,
ecology, genetics and genomics, lactation, management, nutrition, physiology, production,
reproduction, stress, and toxicology.
The appointee will have access to wide-ranging animal and infrastructure resources and many
collaborative opportunities within the department and with colleagues in campus units such as the
School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, California National Primate Research Center and
College of Biological Sciences.

Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. Species
expertise emphasizing poultry is preferred however other agriculturally-important livestock species
will be considered. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and
graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in
microbiology/immunology.
Salary: Commensurate with experience within the Assistant Professor ranks at the University of
