Makerere University Library Celebrates the World Library Day, Friday 24th May 2013.
The World Library Day is celebrated internationally in different parts of the World since 1897. In Uganda, the
Library Day was first celebrated by Makerere University Library (MakLib) on 22nd May 2009. Since then, it has
become an annual event. This year’s celebrations will be held on Friday 24th May 2013. The theme of the day
will be: “The Future of Maklib with Infinite Possibilities. This is in line with the annual theme of the
international body governing libraries (IFLA), which is: “Future Libraries: Infinite Possibilities”.
The activities to mark this year’s World Library day celebrations at Maklib include:
i. Workshops: Maklib in conjunction with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) will conduct a one day
Information Literacy session for the staff and students of the Chemistry Department, Makerere University and
librarians on Tuesday 7th May 2013. Mr. Mike Petersen from RSC will focus on increasing usage of a wide
range of RSC journals and databases. In addition, Maklib will conduct an Outreach programme for librarians
in CUUL (Consortium of Uganda University Libraries) institutions on Wednesday 8th May 2013. The major
focus of the workshop will be technological advances in Cataloguing and Research Management.
ii. Essay Competition: An essay competition has been organised in line with the Library Day theme: The
Future of Maklib with Infinite Possibilities. The competition is open to all Library and Information Science
Practioners as well as students. Prizes will be awarded to the best essays submitted in the two categories:
students and Librarians.
iii. Exhibition: Publishers have been invited to show-case their products. These include: Moran Publishers,
Fountain Publishers, Makerere University Bookshop, and Longman Pearson. The Library will also exhibit its
unique collections and demonstrate some of its online services.
iv. Recognition: This time round, MakLib will recognise Researchers who have produced high impact research
above the Global Average using the Research Management Tool to determine/identify the researchers/authors
which in turn, has contributed to Makerere University’s Webometrics ranking. Maklib will also recognise the
Lecturer who participated in the SAGE Publishers’ survey targeting academic staff which investigated the,
“Value of Academic Libraries in the Developing World” conducted in twelve (12) universities including
Makerere University. The Makerere University Lecturer who emerged as the Prize Winner will be recognised
and MakLib is proud of his achievement.
v. Maklib Then and Now: Librarians who have been part of Maklib’s history will share their memories and
provide an insight into the future of Maklib.
