Current Book Project:
“Islamists, Secularists and Power Sharing in the Islamic World.” Funded by a grant from
the MacArthur Foundation, this study seeks to explain the factors that promote or hinder
informal or explicit power-sharing pacts in Islamic polities. Based on field research in
Algeria, Kuwait and Indonesia, the study highlights how different patterns of state
building create ideological and institutional fields that promote or discourage elite
bargaining in autocracies divided by contending notions of political authority.
