Edina Girls Badminton 2015 Edina Girl’s Badminton Guidelines for Players and Parents The following information pertains to this years Edina Girl’s Badminton program. Please review these guidelines and be ready to enjoy an incredibly fun filled season on the courts. Coaches Varsity Coach Assistant Coach & Coordinator Steve Henke Margo Henke edinabadminton@comcast.net Goals for the Season 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. To become better badminton players mentally and physically. To respect and learn more about the game of badminton. To display integrity, honesty and proper etiquette on and off the court. To create a fair and competitive spirit within our team. To have fun! Team Participants and Matches All players will play at least one match each scheduled match date(with the exception being tri-matches and tournaments). 1. The varsity badminton team will consist of the top 10 players. Players will be selected using the criteria described in the team selection. 2. The junior varsity badminton team will consist of the next 10 players. Selection for this team will be described in team selection. 3. All players should be aware of the time commitment for practices and matches. Players are expected to attend all practices and/or matches throughout the season. Be aware of the multiple activities statement. Team Policies 1. Chemical/Substance use: The Edina High School Chemical Policy will be followed. Please be aware that the first infraction consists of missing two weeks of matches. Make good decisions! 2. Practice times and locations are found on player’s calendars. Please check our BADMINTON CALENDAR 3. Absence Policy: Players are expected to contact their coach prior to missing practice. Failing to contact coaches may result in a player being held out of their next match. 4. School Work: It is your responsibility to make up any work you miss due to early dismissal from school for a match. Please talk to your teachers to set up a time to make up work. 5. Behavior: Players are expected to be honest and display proper etiquette on the court. Please report improper behavior to your coach if issues should arise. Team Selection 1. The varsity team will consist of the top 10 players who: a. Show the greatest level of skill and scoring throughout try-outs and challenge matches. b. Consistently hit the birdie accurately. (Coaches will evaluate players during tryouts) c. Understand the rules of badminton. d. Display a passion for the game of badminton. e. Are responsible and dependable players (attend all practices). f. Final line-ups are the sole discretion of the coaches. g. Conditions in the past years to “Letter” have been to play in 2 Varsity matches, however that was a guideline, we attempt to grant letters to those whose skill and commitment is exceptional. 2. The junior varsity team will consist of the next 10 players who: a. Have demonstrated the same qualities as above. 3. Exhibition matches are as valid as Varsity and JV. This designation brings on a lot of un-needed angst as this is simply a term used by the high schools designating everyone not in the top 20 matches. Don’t sweat this, most schools have 60 + girls and will play multiple matches if possible. “Exhibition” players often have to compete against the top players at the smaller schools. I consider everyone not in the top ten varsity spots, junior varsity. 4. Coaches will move players between the teams, as they deem necessary throughout the season. Team Uniforms 1. Players are expected to purchase a team uniform. Team shirts and shorts must be worn during each match. Proper attire and etiquette must be displayed at all times (including practice). Shoes must be non-marking court or tennis shoes. Remember, we are guests at other high school gyms. 2. More team apparel may be available at the beginning of the season. More details to be given later. Transportation 1. Students must provide their own transportation to and from practice. There are activity buses shuttling from the high school to Southview. Practice for the varsity and junior varsity will be held at the Southview Middle School Main Gym. Enter on the west side by the aquatic center. 2. Edina High School will provide transportation to away matches. Players must ride with the team bus. Basic Order of play for Badminton from MSHSL 1. A team shall consist 10 players (4 singles, 3 doubles teams) 2. Meet will be determined by most team wins out of the possible 4 singles and 3 doubles matches. 3. Individual matches will be best of 3, 21 point games. Final Thoughts We’re excited to be a part of the fastest growing Edina Varsity sport. Check out the BADMINTON WEBSITE. We will maintain this page and provide regular updates and throughout our season. One of our main areas of attention this year will involve a player’s awareness of court management and proper practice routines. During practices, we will coach players in shot options and strategies while playing matches. Players hoping to make our team must be willing to work both mentally and physically in preparing for our short season. It is important to work hard outside of practice to master basic skills. While we will do everything we can to work on fundamentals, team time is better spent working on match play. Players can expect to practice 2- 2½ hours each night after school. Practice will begin at 3:30 pm and usually go until 5:30 pm. Players should make the necessary arrangements to attend all practices. It is our hope to continue our pursuit of fun while becoming more focused during practice and matches. Margo & Steve Henke
