Agronomy Professional Development Fellowship Guidelines
Agronomy Professional Development Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis in order to support
student activities that promote professional growth through structured mentorship in ISU Agronomy research,
teaching and/or outreach.
The fellowship is limited to ISU students who are receiving Agronomy credit for their professional
development experience and have an ISU Agronomy faculty member serving as their mentor. A junior or
senior must have an ISU cumulative GPA greater than 3.200. A sophomore must have an ISU cumulative GPA
greater than 3.300. A freshman can apply if he or she has previously completed an internship as a high school
student. Outstanding high school students may be considered for a summer internship under this program.
High school interns may receive either ISU or high school credit for their experience.
A student can be awarded up to two fellowships as an undergraduate, with each fellowship lasting no more
than one year (12 months). Before a second fellowship will be awarded the student’s mentor must submit a
letter explaining the additional benefits of continuing the fellowship. It is expected these benefits will include
a jointly authored publication or presentation at an important professional conference.
Agronomy Professional Development Fellowships will be jointly funded by this program and the faculty
mentor. This program will pay no more than $3000 or one-half of the fellowship, whichever is less. Number
of fellowships is contingent upon funding availability.
A complete application will consist of an application from the student wherein she or he explains her or his
goal of the fellowship and a letter of support by the faculty mentor explaining how the student will benefit
professionally from the fellowship as well as giving a calendar of activities and a letter of recommendation
from the student’s referee, who cannot be a member of the ISU Scholarship Committee. Incomplete or
inaccurate applications will not be considered.
At the end of the experience, all Agronomy Professional Development Fellows will write an abstract
(approximately 300 words) about their fellowship accomplishments, due to the Scholarship Committee by the
end of the fellowship. Students will also prepare a poster on their work and display it in Agronomy Hall,
preferably near the Student Services Office. Alternative forms of professionally presenting the research (e.g.,
oral presentation) are acceptable. Students are also encouraged to present their work at a professional
meeting and to publish the research. The presentation of a paper or poster and publication can be
incorporated with faculty or graduate student presentations and publications. The Undergraduate Scholarship
Committee should be informed about student's individual and collaborative presentations and publication.
Failure to complete the abstract and poster (or alternative presentation of the research) can result in
exclusion of the faculty mentor from future participation in the program.
