BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible for design, implementation and maintenance of complex database
management systems that support applications.
Design, implementation, and maintenance of database management systems (DBMSs)
that support applications; effective and efficient mapping of data models that take
advantage of the characteristics of the specific DBMS used. Responsibilities include the
establishment and enforcement of database standards and integrity controls, the
analysis of informational requirements, and development of database specifications.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for designing, modeling, developing and supporting complex
Database Management Systems (DBMS). Develops complex database and
warehousing designs across multiple platforms and computing environments.

Analyzes complex data requirements, application and processing architectures,
data dictionaries, and database schema(s), and then designs, develops, amends,
optimizes, and certifies complex database schema design to meet system(s)
requirements.

Gathers, analyzes, and normalizes relevant information related to, and from
complex business processes, functions, and operations to evaluate data
credibility and determine relevance and meaning.

JOB COMPETENCIES:

Design, implementation, and maintenance of database management systems
(DBMSs) for a single large complex application or several smaller complex
application processes / modules.

Effectively and efficiently map data models that that support complex applications
for a single large complex application or several smaller complex application
processes / modules while taking advantage of the characteristics of the specific
DBMS used.

Implement databases based on database standards and IS Architectural and Security
protocols.

Perform analysis and judgment outside established protocols.

Provide user support for multiple databases.

Develop database requirements based on complex business requirements from
clients and complex technical requirements from IS support specialties.

Work effectively with some oversight.

Take responsibility for the relationship with a client for a specific database with
limited scope (department, center, single large application).

Provide timely status updates to supervisor and client management highlighting
potential issues/problems.

Work effectively with multiple co-workers, clients, and other contacts; initiate
interaction to clarify and improve relationship.

Translate broad project scope and goals into detailed work plan with tasks,
accountabilities, dependencies, milestones and deadlines; monitors project plans to
ensure progress.

Balance multiple priorities and respond to day-to-day problems while maintaining
progress on regularly scheduled project work.

Take personal responsibility for quality and timeliness of results for projects and
tasks.

Consistently proposes original solutions, proposals, and recommendations within
context of a discrete project or objective.

Understand work unit and IS goals and priorities.

Designated Administrator
LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION:
May supervise students and/or provide functional guidance of support staff or other
employees who work on a project or assignment on a temporary or intermittent basis.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Working knowledge of:

Data modeling concepts and design techniques; establishing and maintaining
database definitions; testing and debugging databases; maintenance of the integrity
of database structures.

Appropriate development or scripting language(s), operating systems, reporting
tools, relational database design and maintenance, remote processing and virtual
systems.

Development concepts; hardware architecture and its capabilities; principles and
techniques of studying business processes for new or modified applications;
principles of systems design; technical report writing; and application of algorithms
and mathematical modeling and record selection.

Computer system analysis, design, testing, debugging and maintenance techniques
and practices.
Demonstrated ability to:

Develop complex databases and detailed database specifications;

Analyze data and situations, reason logically and creatively identify problems, draw
valid conclusions, and develop effective solutions.

Prepare and interpret structured and/or computerized diagramming techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and experience: A baccalaureate degree in an appropriate field and two or more
years of relevant professional experience or education equivalent to an Associate Degree in
IS/Computer Science and four years of relevant professional experience.
Working knowledge of:

Complex Data modeling concepts and design techniques; establishing and
maintaining database definitions; testing and debugging databases; maintenance of
the integrity of database structures.

Complex development or scripting language(s), operating systems, reporting tools,
relational database design and maintenance, remote processing and virtual systems.

Development concepts; hardware architecture and its capabilities; principles and
techniques of studying business processes for new or modified applications;
principles of systems design; technical report writing; and application of algorithms
and mathematical modeling and record selection.

Complex computer system analysis, design, testing, debugging and maintenance
techniques and practices.
Demonstrated ability to:

Develop complex databases and detailed database specifications;

Analyze complex data and situations, reason logically and creatively identify
problems, draw valid conclusions, and develop effective complex solutions.

Prepare and interpret complex structured and/or computerized diagramming
techniques.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of
force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Typically
requires sitting, walking, standing, bending, keying, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive
motions.
Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus
occasionally.
