Introduction
History
The Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography (RIP Study) Database was created on an Excel Database
in 1999 and populated with data for Grampian children, aged between two and eight, diagnosed with
asthma/wheezing illness and controls.
Respiratory illness is the largest cause of morbidity in developed countries and the largest cause of
mortality in developing countries. RIP provides a surface measurement technique for lung function as
an alternative to the invasive pneumotachography (PNT) method normally used.
The database holds current information for approximately 98 children and includes basic patient data,
health status describing asthma severity and family history of atopy.
Overview of Database
The Respiratory Inductive Plethysmography Data is held on an Excel spreadsheet on the University
File Server and accessed via a Personal Computer (PC), within the Royal Aberdeen Children’s
Hospital. There are no external links to any other systems and access is for single users only via a
security password.
Information on approximately 100 children is held in Excel and SPSS amounting to approximately 1
Megabyte of storage, containing the basic data detailed in the Main Table Definitions Section.
Respiratory assessments were carried out for young children with respiratory illness and the parents
were asked to complete a Health Status and Family History questionnaire relating to respiratory
problems.
