Since then I have completed a significant number of research projects that are reflected in my articles in peer-reviewed journals and my abstracts in national and international meetings. Over the years my research projects have included: 1. Anatomical studies of the thyroid, parathyroids and adrenal glands. 2. Historical studies 3. Clinical and experimental studies in liver surgery and liver transplantation 4. Clinical and experimental studies in pancreatic surgery 5. Clinical studies in breast surgery 6. Experimental models of liver failure in large and small animals 7. Experimental studies in isolation and transplantation of hepatocytes and pancreatic islets 8. Experimental and clinical studies of liver support systems 9. Experimental and clinical studies in laparoscopic surgery 10. Studies in the nutrition of critically ill patients My current research work focuses on the following areas: 1. Experimental application of liver support methods in a large animal model of posthepatectomy liver failure that I have developped. The aim of this research is to find a method of liver support that would be suitable for patients that fall into liver dysfunction or liver failure after extensive liver surgery. This is a particularly important in Greece where HBV-related liver cancer is prevalent and the lack of liver donors makes liver transplantation unavailable in a timely manner. The two liver support strategies that I have been testing is the hepatocyte-based bioartificial liver and the peritoneal albumin dialysis, an innovative method that we developed in the lab of the 2nd Department of Surgery in Aretaieion Hospital. Results from this ongoing research have already been published in major journals. 2. Experimental application of antioxidants in order to reduce ischemia/reperfusion injury of the liver in a large animal model of hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation. Experiments of this project are ongoing and have already yielded promising results. 3. Clinical application of methods to reduce ischemia/reperfusion injury of the liver remnant during liver surgery. Under this project I have already tested in small clinical trials the value of ischemic preconditioning, intermittent clamping of the portal triad, and use of antioxidants. Currently I am testing novel combinations of antioxidants in hepatectomies performed under selective vascular exclusion of the liver, i.e. occlusion of the hepatoduodenal ligament and the extrahepatic trunks of the major hepatic veins without interruption of the flow in the inferior vena cava. 4. Study of circulating tumor cells during liver surgery. 5. Clinical applications of radio-guided breast surgery. This research includes a protocol of sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast canncer under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis and another protocol of radio guided localization of occult breast lesions. 3 4 -4- TEACHING CONTRIBUTIONS 2002-present Teaching of 4th and 6th year students of medicine in amphitheatres and practical tutoring in patient wards (3-6 hours/week) and operating theatres according to the official program of the University of Athens 2002-present 2002-present Training of surgical residents in operations Supervision of 12 PhD candidates in the experimental surgical laboratory of the 2nd Department of Surgery, University of Athens Medical School Organization for the first time in Greece of the series of “sentinel lymph node biopsy seminars and hands on courses”in collaboraation with University College London and training of 50 Greek surgeons 10/2010-present LECTURES 1989-present Invited lecturer in a total of 75 meetings and congresses, regional (33), national (33) and international (9) on hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, endocrine surgery, breast surgery, liver support technology, experimental surgery and suurgical critical care MANUSCRIPT REVIEW American Journal of Transplantation European Surgical Research BMC Gastroenterology Journal of Postgraduate Medicine 4 5 -5- BIBLIOGRAPHY SUMMARY OF INTERNATIONAL PUBLICATIONS* Number Full articles in international journals indexed by the Science Citation Index (SCI-MEDLINE) Publications in congress proceedings and book chapters Abstracts 115 Sum of impact factors (Journal citation index 2010) 262 Citations (as indexed in SCOPUS 1100 H index 16 15 - - - 88 - - - Among the full articles 36% are experimental papers, 37% are retrospective analyses of case-series or prospective clinical trials, 9% are reviews, 16% are case reports and 3% are letters.
