Caps and Gowns
ALL SENIORS need to order a cap and gown unless they are absolutely sure they have
one that will fit from a sibling or friend who attended New Haven within the past few
years (must fall midway between the knee and ankle). All students will be wearing purple
this year. If you missed the deadline for the cap and gown orders from Herff Jones,
please mail the order form to or drop it off at:
Herff Jones, P.O. Box 898; Auburn, IN 46706
260-927-0672
Further questions may be directed to Rod Williams at rwilliams@herffjones.com
GRADUATION –
More information will be coming soon. Just mark your calendars for Saturday, June 6 @
7:00 p.m. @ the Memorial Coliseum. Remember that your son or daughter must have
completed all credit requirements in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.
Please have your son or daughter check their credit evaluations again and see their
counselor if they have any questions or concerns.
Dual Credit – requesting transcripts
You will need to request official transcripts from IPFW, Ivy Tech, and Trine University
to take to the college you are attending if you took any dual credits over the course of
your years at New Haven High School. The college will not accept the courses just
written on a NHHS transcript. These should be available at the colleges during the first
two weeks of June. The transcripts will be necessary to transfer these courses and give
you the college credits so you do not need to take the classes again in college.
LET”S TALK MONEY………
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
Now what……
If you filed the FAFSA by March 10th, 2015, AND have
applied and been accepted to the colleges that you
listed on your FAFSA, you will receive a Financial Aid
Award letter. Most colleges post these to your son or
daughter’s account on the college’s web portal. Your
son or daughter needs to create an account in order to
view it. Upon acceptance to the college they would
have received directions to set up an account. Some
colleges will send a written letter in the mail. If you
do not receive an award letter by the middle of April,
you should contact the college’s financial aid office.
If you have any corrections or edits to make to your
FAFSA, they must be submitted before May 15, 2015.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Updated scholarships are posted to this newsletter and the
website. Look once a week for updates.
The scholarships listed are available through the guidance office and/or
online. To be considered for a scholarship sponsored by a college or
university, it is best to apply for admission to that college or university ASAP.
Scholarship paper applications are available in the guidance office, unless
there is a web address listed.
Scholarships are on a separate attachment.

Scholarship/Helpful Databases
Several websites have scholarship databases that are worth registering for. NEVER pay to
have someone help you find scholarships!!! Check out the links below.
www.MeritAid.com – This website is a great source for merit scholarships (academic
scholarships) from colleges across the country. Click on and find the colleges you are
interested in. All of their merit scholarships will be listed!!!
www.fastweb.com - This is a great scholarship database you should all be registered on!!!
Take a few minutes to register and see how many scholarship opportunities await you!!!
** Please contact the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid of the university/college that
you have been accepted to find out about merit scholarships or institutional scholarships
within their program. You may qualify for direct scholarships.
www.campusexplorer.com – This college search engine aims to help students determine
which college is the best match for them. Students enter information such as their SAT or
ACT scores and grade-point average, and the site determines which schools they are eligible
for. The site then matches students with specific schools on this list, based on the
preferences they indicate on topics such as distance from home, academic interests, and
their financial situation. The site lists both two- and four-year institutions, as well as trade
schools and career education options, with more than 6,000 schools included in its database.

The Selective Service System

ATTENTION SENIOR MALES - SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males 18 years old must
register with the Selective within a month of your 18th birthday.
Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who
are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. It
is important to know that even though he is registered, a man will not
automatically be inducted into the military. In a crisis requiring a
draft, men would be called in sequence determined by random lottery
number and year of birth. Then, they would be examined for mental,
physical and moral fitness by the military before being deferred or
exempted from military service or inducted into the Armed Forces.
There are three ways to register:
 Log on to http://www.sss.gov
 Register on the FAFSA form when filling it out
 Register at your local post office
NCAA Clearinghouse: If you have plans to play Division I or Division
II athletics next year in college, please make sure you have registered with the NCAA
Clearinghouse (http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net/). You will need to register online,
pay the registration fee, and bring a transcript release paper to me so I can send your
transcript to them. Also, if you have not sent your SAT scores to them you will need to
call the College Board (1-866-630-9305) and have that done. I believe the cost is around
$9.00.
NAIA Eligibility Center: If you have plans to play college athletics
at the NAIA level, please make sure you have registered with the NAIA eligibility center
(http://www.playnaia.org/). You will need to register online, pay the registration fee, and
bring a transcript release paper to me so I can send your transcript to them. Also, if you
have not sent your SAT scores to them you will need to call the College Board (1-866630-9305) and have that done. I believe the cost is around $9.00.

SAT/ACT Preparation


College Board, the official SAT website, is a great option for SAT
preparation. They offer an official SAT Question of the Day, an
SAT study plan, sample practice questions, and a free practice
test which reports your scores back to you immediately.
Apps for your phone/tablet:
o SAT Up: SAT Up integrates social media elements into the
study experience. By completing banks of questions, users
can earn achievement badges such as "See the Light,"
awarded for 10 correct responses, and allow SAT Up to
predict SAT scores.
o ACTStudent: This is the official app for ACT test takers,
and is available for iOS users. Students can use this app to
register for tests, view past scores and practice four of the
five sections on the exam. Like ACT Question of the Day,
ACTStudent explains the reasoning behind the correct
answer, as well as how to reach it. While the app includes
science questions – a rarity in the app world – it does not
offer practice for the writing section of the exam.
