God Leads His People Out of Egypt (Exodus 14)
Main Point: God wants us to listen to Him and follow Him completely.
Key Verse: Moses, go up close and listen to the LORD. Then come back and tell us, and we will do
everything He says. – Deuteronomy 5:27
Materials: Lots of torn up pieces of blue paper (for the “water” in the “Red Sea”), pennies and nickels.
Hands on Application:
 Say: Wow, that was an incredible lesson! Just imagine God making a path through the sea! It’s
incredible! It’s even more amazing when you think about the reason He did it: to rescue His people!
 Say: Let’s do a little illustration of this miracle. Have the pile of torn up blue paper and the
pennies on the table. Now, pretend for a moment that this paper is the Red Sea and that these
pennies are the Israelite people trapped behind it. Bring out the nickels. Now imagine that these
nickels are the Egyptian army chasing after the Israelites. We all know what happens next – God
parted the sea to rescue the Israelites! Part the “sea” and have the “Israelites” go through.
Then what happened? The Egyptians chased the Israelites into the sea. Right. But what did God
do? He allowed the water to flood over the Egyptians. Have your “Egyptians” move into the
“sea” and push the “water” back on top of them. Be sure to cover them completely. God
defeated the Egyptians once and for all and rescued His people!
Group Discussion:
 Say: This is an incredible story, but if you think about it, it is much more familiar than it may seem
on the surface. Think about this. Where were the Israelites going to go once they had left Egypt?
The land that God promised to them. Right, the Promised Land, or the place that God had for them.
What was the problem? They were blocked by the Red Sea and the Egyptians were coming for
them. Exactly! Or, to put it more simply, the people were separated from what God had for them,
and they were in great danger. But just when things were looking hopeless, God made a way for
His people through the sea. God rescued His people!
 Say: Does this situation sound familiar? God rescues His people who are separated from Him and
who are in serious danger? To me, this sounds a lot like the situation of the human race. Each and
every person who has ever lived is separated from God, but instead of being separated from Him
by a sea, we are separated from Him by something much bigger – our sin (Isaiah 59:2). And,
because of this sin, we are in deep, deep danger – danger that is much more serious than an entire
army charging towards us. We are in danger of being separated from God for eternity. But what
happened next? God rescued His people! He made a way for us to be with Him. How? By sending
His son, Jesus, the perfect man, to die for us. Through Jesus, God made a way for us to be with
Him, just like He made a way through the waters for the Israelites (Romans 5:1). And He
completely destroys our sin like He destroyed the Egyptian army. How do we take the path that
God has made for us? By depending on His son Jesus to make us right with God rather than
anything we could do ourselves. God rescues us if we trust in His rescue plan, just like Moses and
the Israelites did.
Conversation with God (Prayer): Pray that your students will listen to God’s rescue plan the same way
that the Israelites did. Fill in the prayer journal and close in prayer.
