Committee Award with Society Recognition
Each year the ASTM D-13 Committee on Textiles recognizes an individual for their
accomplishments and contributions to textile science, particularly for applications of
engineering principles to the field in one or more of the following areas:
1. Scientific achievements in the development of fundamental knowledge of textile fibers
and structures, or methods for the evaluation of their properties.
2. Contribution in securing the acceptance and use of fundamental knowledge by the
industry.
3. Contribution to textiles education.
4. Contribution to the organization and direction of group research and development in
the textile field.
The purpose of the Harold DeWitt Smith Memorial Award is to stimulate the scientific
approach to the problems of textile fiber utilization, and to lift the design of textile
structures from the empirical to the scientific. These were the aims of Harold DeWitt
Smith, the scientist the award commemorates.
