MICHAEL KAUFMAN, Ph.D.
Michael Kaufman is an educator, writer, and consultant focused on innovative
approaches to engaging men and boys in the promotion of gender equality and
ending violence against women. He works for governments, corporations, trade
unions, universities, and non-governmental organizations. He is the co-founder
of the White Ribbon Campaign, the largest effort in the world of men working to
end violence against women.
He has worked extensively within the UN system, including UNICEF, UNESCO,
UNIFEM, UNDP, UNFPA, IFAD, and UNESCO in New York, Rome, Paris,
Beijing, Kathmandu, Ankara, Geneva, Nairobi, and Delhi. He has worked with
numerous non-governmental organizations including OXFAM, International Red
Cross, Save the Children, and Amnesty International, as well as with
governments on six continents.
He does training and coaching for government ministries and corporations on
finding positive ways to prevent and respond to sexual harassment at the
workplace as well as other workplace gender issues. He wrote the on-line
training program on sexual harassment being used by tens of thousands of staff
at the United Nations, and designed and carries out the sexual harassment
prevention and response training for UNESCO.
He is the author or editor of six books on gender issues, on democracy and
development studies, and an award-winning novel, The Possibility of Dreaming
on a Night Without Stars. His articles have appeared in newspapers,
magazines, and journals around the world and have been translated into
languages including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish,
Estonian, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese.
He has worked in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Holland,
Belgium, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain,
Turkey, Germany, Austria, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Georgia, Kenya, Namibia,
Mexico, Jamaica, Trinidad, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Costa Rica,
Nicaragua, Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Australia, New Zealand,
Japan, South Korea, Philippines, India, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal, the
United States and Canada.
Dr. Kaufman previously taught at York University in Toronto where he was
Deputy Director of the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean.
He lives in Toronto, Canada, is married, and has a daughter and a son.
