َ ُ‫ِيم َوإِ ْس َما ِعي َل َوإِ ْس َحاقَ َويَ ْعق‬
َ ‫إِنَّا أ َ ْو َح ْينَا إِلَيْكَ َك َما أ َ ْو َح ْينَا إِلَى نُوحٍ َوالنَّبِ ِيينَ ِمن بَ ْع ِد ِه َوأَ ْو َح ْينَا إِلَى إِب َْراه‬
}163{ ‫ُورا‬
ُ ‫َارونَ َو‬
ً ‫سلَ ْي َمانَ َوآت َ ْينَا دَ ُاوودَ زَ ب‬
ُ ‫س َوه‬
َ ‫سى َوأَي‬
َ ‫َو ِعي‬
َ ُ‫ُّوب َويُون‬
[Yusufali 4:163] We have sent thee inspiration, as We sent it to Noah and the
Messengers after him: we sent inspiration to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob and the
Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and to David We gave the Psalms.

}86{ َ‫طا َو ُكالًّ فض َّْلنَا َعلَى ْالعَالَ ِمين‬
َ َ‫َوإِ ْس َما ِعي َل َو ْالي‬
َ ُ‫س َع َويُون‬
[Yusufali 6:86] And Isma’il and Elisha, and Jonas, and Lot: and to all We gave favor
above the nations:
}87{ ‫ص َراطٍ ُّم ْست َ ِق ٍيم‬
ِ ‫َو ِم ْن آبَائِ ِه ْم َوذ ُ ِريَّاتِ ِه ْم َوإِ ْخ َوانِ ِه ْم َواجْ تَبَ ْينَا ُه ْم َو َهدَ ْينَا ُه ْم إِلَى‬
[Yusufali 6:87] (To them) and to their fathers, and progeny and brethren: We chose
them, and we guided them to a straight way. (Is the “straight way” to all people?)

}95{ َ‫ت اّللِ فَت َ ُكونَ ِمنَ ْالخَا ِس ِرين‬
ِ ‫َوالَ ت َ ُكون ََّن ِمنَ الَّذِينَ َكذَّبُواْ ِبآيَا‬
[Yusufali 10:95] Nor be of those who reject the signs of Allah, or thou shalt be of those
who perish.
ْ َّ‫ِإ َّن الَّذِينَ َحق‬
}96{ َ‫ت َعلَ ْي ِه ْم َك ِل َمتُ َر ِبكَ الَ يُؤْ ِمنُون‬
[Yusufali 10:96] Those against whom the word of thy Lord hath been verified would not
believe}97{ ‫يم‬
َ َ‫َولَ ْو َجاءتْ ُه ْم ُك ُّل آ َي ٍة َحتَّى َي َر ُواْ ْال َعذ‬
َ ‫اب األ َ ِل‬
[Yusufali 10:97] Even if every Sign was brought unto them, - until they see (for
themselves) the penalty grievous.
ْ ‫َت قَ ْريَةٌ آ َمن‬
ْ ‫فَلَ ْوالَ كَان‬
‫الخ ْزي ِ فِي ْال َحيَاة َ الدُّ ْنيَا َو َمتَّ ْعنَا ُه ْم ِإلَى‬
َ ‫س لَ َّما آ َمنُواْ َك‬
ِ ‫اب‬
َ َ‫ش ْفنَا َع ْن ُه ْم َعذ‬
َ ُ‫َت فَنَفَ َع َها ِإي َمانُ َها ِإالَّ قَ ْو َم يُون‬
}98{ ‫ين‬
ٍ ‫ِح‬
[Yusufali 10:98] Why was there not a single township (among those We warned), which
believed, - so its faith should have profited it, - except the people of Jonah? When they
believed, We removed from them the penalty of shame in the life of the present, and
permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while. (What caused God to remove the penalty
of shame?)

َّ ‫س ْب َحانَكَ ِإنِي ُكنتُ ِمنَ ال‬
ُّ ‫ظ َّن أَن لَّن نَّ ْقد َِر َعلَ ْي ِه فَنَادَى فِي ال‬
َ َ‫َاضبًا ف‬
َ‫ظا ِل ِمين‬
ِ ‫ظلُ َما‬
ُ َ‫ت أَن َّال ِإلَهَ ِإ َّال أَنت‬
َ ‫ون ِإذ ذَّه‬
ِ ‫َب ُمغ‬
ِ ُّ‫َوذَا الن‬
}87{
[Yusufali 21:87] And remember Zun-nun, when he departed in wrath: He imagined that
We had no power over him! But he cried through the depths of darkness, “There is no
god but thou: glory to thee: I was indeed wrong!”
}88{ َ‫نجي ْال ُمؤْ ِمنِين‬
ِ ُ‫فَا ْست َ َج ْبنَا لَهُ َونَ َّج ْينَاهُ ِمنَ ْالغ َِم َو َكذَلِكَ ن‬
[Yusufali 21:88] So We listened to him: and delivered him from distress: and thus do We
deliver those who have faith.

َ ‫س لَ ِمنَ ْال ُم ْر‬
َ ُ‫َو ِإ َّن يُون‬
[Yusufali 37:139] So also was Jonah among those sent (by Us).
}140{ ‫ون‬
ِ ‫ِإذْ أَبَقَ ِإلَى ْالفُ ْل ِك ْال َم ْش ُح‬
[Yusufali 37:140] When he ran away (like a slave from captivity) to the ship (fully)
laden,
}141{ َ‫ضين‬
ِ ‫ساه ََم فَ َكانَ ِم ْن ْال ُمدْ َح‬
َ َ‫ف‬
[Yusufali 37:141] He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:
}142{ ‫فَ ْالتَقَ َمهُ ْال ُحوتُ َوه َُو ُم ِلي ٌم‬
[Yusufali 37:142] Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of
blame.

}143{ َ‫س ِب ِحين‬
َ ‫فَلَ ْو َال أَنَّهُ َكانَ ِم ْن ْال ُم‬
[Yusufali 37:143] Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,
ْ َ‫ث فِي ب‬
َ ِ‫لَلَب‬
}144{ َ‫طنِ ِه إِلَى يَ ْو ِم يُ ْب َعثُون‬
[Yusufali 37:144] He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of
Resurrection.
}145{ ‫س ِقي ٌم‬
َ ‫فَنَبَذْنَاهُ بِ ْالعَ َراء َوه َُو‬
[Yusufali 37:145] But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,
}146{ ‫ين‬
َ ‫َوأَنبَتْنَا َعلَ ْي ِه‬
ٍ ‫ش َج َرة ً ِمن يَ ْق ِط‬
[Yusufali 37:146] And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd
kind.
}147{ َ‫س ْلنَاهُ ِإلَى ِمئ َ ِة أ َ ْلفٍ أ َ ْو َي ِزيدُون‬
َ ‫َوأ َ ْر‬
[Yusufali 37:147] And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more.
}148{ ‫ين‬
ٍ ‫فَآ َمنُوا فَ َمتَّ ْعنَا ُه ْم ِإلَى ِح‬
[Yusufali 37:148] And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a
while.

ُ ‫ت إِذْ نَادَى َوه َُو َم ْك‬
}48{ ‫ظو ٌم‬
ِ ‫ب ْال ُحو‬
ِ ‫ص‬
ْ ‫فَا‬
ِ ‫اح‬
َ ‫صبِ ْر ِل ُح ْك ِم َربِكَ َو َال ت َ ُكن َك‬
[Yusufali 68:48] So wait with patience for the Command of thy Lord, and be not like the
Companion of the Fish, - when he cried out in agony. (What was Jonah’s sin?)
}49{ ‫ار َكهُ نِ ْع َمةٌ ِمن َّربِ ِه لَنُبِذَ بِ ْالعَ َراء َوه َُو َمذْ ُمو ٌم‬
َ َ‫لَ ْو َال أَن تَد‬
[Yusufali 68:49] Had not Grace from his Lord reached him, he would indeed have been
cast off on the naked shore, in disgrace. (Have you experienced this grace? Mercy?)
}50{ َ‫صا ِل ِحين‬
َّ ‫فَاجْ تَبَاهُ َربُّهُ فَ َج َعلَهُ ِمنَ ال‬
[Yusufali 68:50] Thus did his Lord choose him and make him of the Company of the
Righteous.

2. Key verses in the Bible
Jonah 1-4...Would you like to read the full account in the Torah? (Focus on key aspects
in biblical account…God’s love for the people of Nineveh; how He seeks them out with
the sign of Jonah; Jonah’s unwillingness to go to ‘pagans’ etc.)
(Jonah 1:17) But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside
the fish three days and three nights. (Why is this important?)
(Matthew 12:38) Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him,
"Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." (Why are they asking for a
miraculous sign?)
(39) He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But
none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
(40) For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of
Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
(41) The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn
it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
(42) The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn
it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one
greater than Solomon is here. (What does ‘one greater than Solomon is here’ mean?)
3. Importance of this Sign:
Physical part of this Sign – God’s plan was to send Jonah to warn Nineveh. God did this
because of His grace and mercy. When the people repented God forgave them. Also we
see the individual role of God’s work in Jonah’s life. Like the people of Nineveh, when
Jonah ignores God he is punished, but as soon as he repents, God has mercy.
Spiritual part of this Sign – Matt 12:40-42 “...as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three
days and three nights, so will the son of man be...something greater than Jonah is
here...something great than Solomon is here...” (Who is it?)
