Dear DAR:
Your organization purchased from us in 2007, the following:
Milleman Newspaper Clippings 1865-1905 Annotated Index, by Jolyn Rae Lockhart-Lawson
The index you purchased is inadequate without a copy of the 72 page scrapbook of newspaper
clippings that it is the guide to. The actual Milleman Newspaper Clipping Scrapbook is available
on microfilm. Once you find what you seek in the Index, you go to the microfilm and see the
whole article. Here is the rundown:
The scrapbook was originally an old Atlas containing maps, which were part of the
official Geological Survey of Idaho; done around 1890. The scrap booker transformed
the Atlas into a scrapbook by cutting and pasting newspaper articles onto the Atlas
pages. The scrap booker was Theodore F. Milleman, Chief Engineer, of the Boise City
Fire Department. There are 72 pages of articles containing information from 1865 to
1905, clipped from Boise newspapers. Much of the information is about news in Boise
City, but also includes news from around Idaho Territory and beyond. The articles not
only give birth, marriage, death, and legal data, but everything from “A Big Fight at
Weiser” to “Carrie Zehner” who came dressed as a basket to the masqued ball, to how
to soak beans over night and who made bids on the materials for the new assay office.
Of course, there are lots of articles about fires, fire-fighting, who had a fire, Fireman’s
uniforms, balls, parades, etc. This scrapbook has been well-used over the years and
can no longer bear handling by the masses, so it has been microfilmed to preserve
what has been preserved. In short, you can view this scrapbook on microfilm.
The scrapbook is the meat and potatoes of this duo. The index is the menu. You have the menu,
why not have the meat and potatoes? Please, consider adding this to your collection today.
Refer to the enclosed catalog and order form.
Sincerely,
